Bill Skarsgård leads Hideo Kojima’s Physint, the new stealth game now backed by Xbox after Sony withdrew its support. The casting also ends months of fan speculation that Robert Pattinson would play the protagonist, a theory built from a shadowy image and one intriguingly vague meeting.

Xbox confirmed the news during its Tokyo Game Show presentation on September 17, 2026. No gameplay footage or screenshots were shown, and the protagonist still does not have a publicly announced name. For now, audiences know his face, which is apparently enough to keep the speculation machinery operating.

Skarsgård is best known for playing Pennywise in 2017’s It, its 2019 sequel, and the television spin-off Welcome to Derry. Physint will be his first video game role.

Why Bill Skarsgård was chosen for Physint

Hideo Kojima said he and Skarsgård had admired each other’s work for years before agreeing to collaborate.

“I’m delighted to confirm the lead role for Physint will be Bill Skarsgård,” Kojima said. “We are both long-time fans of each other’s work, and we’ve decided to embark on this new adventure together.”

Production has already moved beyond polite conversations and publicity photographs. Kojima said Skarsgård and fellow cast member Charlee Fraser completed costume fittings, scans, and camera tests earlier in 2026.

“The costume fittings, scans, and camera tests we conducted with Bill and Charlee earlier this year gave me tremendous confidence in the direction of the project,” he added.

Skarsgård joins an ensemble that also includes Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe. Kojima Productions and Xbox have not disclosed details about their characters, the story, or how closely the game will resemble Kojima’s earlier espionage work.

What happened to the Robert Pattinson rumours

Fans had previously identified Robert Pattinson as the likely lead based on a vague silhouette of the central character. The speculation gained momentum after Pattinson met Kojima and said they had “discussed some things,” a phrase broad enough to support almost any internet theory.

The announcement places Skarsgård firmly in the starring role. With Fraser, Lee, and Hamabe already named as supporting cast members, there is currently no indication that Pattinson has a smaller part either.

That does not prove he has no involvement at all, but neither Xbox nor Kojima Productions has announced him. Until they do, the evidence amounts to a meeting and an indistinct outline, which is not quite a casting contract.

How Xbox became involved with the stealth game

Sony originally supported Physint, which has been described as a spiritual successor to the Metal Gear series. The company later pulled out amid concerns over the project’s budget, allowing Xbox to take over publishing support.

The cost concerns are not especially mysterious. Kojima regularly recruits prominent film and television actors for his projects, and a cast featuring Skarsgård, Fraser, Lee, and Hamabe is unlikely to be assembled with spare change.

The move means Kojima is now working with Xbox on two projects: Physint and the horror game OD. Neither company has clarified whether either title will eventually appear on PlayStation 5.

No release date or launch platforms were confirmed for Physint during the presentation. The project therefore has a star, a supporting cast, and a powerful new backer, but still no public gameplay. Video game development does enjoy revealing things in a carefully rationed order.

What else Xbox showed at Tokyo Game Show

The casting reveal was the biggest announcement from Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show showcase, which focused largely on third-party games and updates.

The presentation included news about:

  • Crazy Taxi
  • Persona 4 Revival
  • A new Fallout 76 update
  • The campaign for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4

The Modern Warfare 4 trailer revealed Mads Mikkelsen as its villain. Mikkelsen previously played a major antagonist in Kojima’s Death Stranding, giving the showcase a curious overlap in celebrity casting.

For Physint, however, the central question has now been answered. Bill Skarsgård will provide the face and performance of its protagonist. Everything else, including who that protagonist is and what players will actually do with him, remains under wraps.
