Amanda Seyfried on Sydney Sweeney Ad Controversy

EntertainmentAmanda Seyfried on Sydney Sweeney Ad Controversy

Amanda Seyfried says she tried to offer Sydney Sweeney a calm place to land during the Sydney Sweeney ad controversy, even as the two were busy promoting The Housemaid.

In an interview with British GQ published June 15, Seyfried described how she approached supporting her co-star after Sweeney’s 2025 American Eagle jeans campaign drew backlash. Critics accused the ads of playing into eugenics language through the “good jeans” and “good genes” wordplay, which is not exactly the kind of side plot anyone wants during a press tour.

“I don’t talk to her about it unless she wants to talk about it,” Seyfried said. “I don’t want to be a source of anything, but whatever you need. You need some fun, you need to laugh, you need cake with me? That’s fine.”

Seyfried said she wanted to be a safe space

Seyfried, 40, said she understood that Sweeney was navigating a difficult public moment while also having to show up for work. The timing mattered: the controversy was unfolding as both actors were promoting The Housemaid, meaning the usual movie-tour questions came with a much heavier backdrop.

Seyfried recalled telling Sweeney, “‘We’ve got to promote this movie and I can be a safe space.’”

The actor said the two still managed to enjoy the promotional run. “We worked really hard and she seemed to be having fun, but I also understood that probably it can’t be f--king easy, where she found herself,” Seyfried said. “I have heard her stand up for herself, but I think she found herself between a rock and a hard place.”

That comment points to the awkward position Sweeney was in: facing public criticism over a brand campaign while continuing to represent a film, answer questions, and appear composed in front of cameras.

Sweeney still made time for a birthday gesture

Seyfried also said she was moved by how thoughtful Sweeney remained during the scrutiny. According to Seyfried, the Euphoria actor made sure to celebrate her birthday while they were on the press circuit.

“She brought me all these cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery,” the Mean Girls star said, “and gave me this most beautiful bracelet.”

Seyfried was describing Sweeney as thoughtful under pressure, not just being polite about a co-star. She was describing someone under pressure who was still paying attention to the people around her.

Sweeney said the reaction surprised her

Sweeney, 28, has said she did not want to engage directly with the backlash surrounding the American Eagle campaign.

“I did a jean ad,” she told GQ in November. “The reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I’m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life.”

She also said the wider conversation around the ads “didn’t affect” her.

“I knew at the end of the day what that ad was for, and it was great jeans,” Sweeney said.

Seyfried’s account doesn’t defend the campaign. It shows one actor trying to support another while the internet did what it tends to do: get loud, with terrible timing.
