The Witcher Remake Must Wait for Witcher 4

The Witcher Remake has been pushed to the back of CD Projekt Red’s production queue, with meaningful progress now dependent on the development of The Witcher 4. The project remains alive, but the studio needs its next mainline game to supply the assets, tools and production systems required to rebuild Geralt’s first adventure.

The publisher confirmed the situation following Gamescom, where it outlined several Witcher projects planned across this year and the next two. For now, however, Fool’s Theory has other work demanding most of its attention.

Why has development been paused?

Fool’s Theory is primarily working on The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, an expansion scheduled for 2027. A smaller group from the studio is also helping CD Projekt Red develop The Witcher 4.

“The Fool’s Theory team is focused mainly on the development of Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, while a relatively small part of their team is supporting the development of The Witcher 4,” CD Projekt Red said.

The remake has effectively been folded into that production process because it will use technology and workflows created for the new mainline game.

“As we have previously announced, the development on The Witcher Remake has been temporarily integrated with The Witcher 4 due to production process dependencies,” the company explained. “As The Witcher Remake will be built on the foundation laid by The Witcher 4, we need to have the necessary assets, tools, and pipelines ready for efficient development.”

In practical terms, Fool’s Theory cannot build efficiently until CD Projekt Red finishes more of the technical groundwork. Assigning most developers to projects that can actually move forward is sensible, if not especially exciting for anyone waiting to revisit the series’ earliest chapter.

Why was the remake announced so early?

CD Projekt Red revealed the project in 2022, long before the foundation needed for full production was ready. The announcement offered transparency about the company’s plans, but it also started the public waiting clock rather enthusiastically.

Major publishers have repeatedly discovered that announcing games several years ahead of release creates expectations they cannot always satisfy. The remake now has no confirmed launch window, and its timetable appears tied to how quickly The Witcher 4 reaches the necessary stage of development.

Other projects beyond CD Projekt Red’s core single-player games have also faced turbulence. Developers working on the multiplayer Witcher spin-off, codenamed Project Sirius, were laid off last month.

What else is CD Projekt Red developing?

According to the company’s latest financial results, released on September 2, most of its developers are assigned to The Witcher 4 and the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. That allocation is hardly surprising, given that both are expected to become the studio’s next major releases.

CD Projekt Red is also expanding the team behind Project Hadar, its mysterious new intellectual property. Reports indicate that the company hopes to add up to 50 developers to the existing 33-person group.

For the moment, Fool’s Theory will concentrate on Songs of the Past and support work for the next Witcher game. Geralt’s original adventure will have to remain where it is until the newer one finishes laying the floorboards.
