How Stranger Things missed the major races
The final season of Stranger Things did receive recognition in below-the-line categories, so the Television Academy did not forget Hawkins entirely. But the Netflix hit was left out of the biggest drama and acting races, including Best Drama and the performer categories.
That is a striking result for a show closing out a long run with a cast that audiences watched grow up on screen. The technical branches still showed up for the series, which makes sense for a production that has always leaned heavily on craft, visual effects, sound, and scale.
The acting and top-series omissions, though, underline a colder reality: affection for a long-running favorite does not always translate into major-category votes. Nostalgia is powerful, but apparently not a guaranteed Emmy strategy. Very rude of math and ballots to behave this way.
Which high-profile actors were left out
Paul Anthony Kelly missed a lead acting nomination for Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, despite buzz around his lookalike performance as John F. Kennedy Jr. The role had the kind of built-in awards appeal that often draws attention: a tragic public figure, a famous romance, and a performance shaped around uncanny resemblance. Voters still passed.
Selena Gomez also missed an acting nomination for Only Murders in the Building. She did, however, receive another nomination as an executive producer on the series. That leaves her still represented at the Emmys, just not in the category many fans were watching most closely.
The Euphoria cast had an uneven morning as well. Zendaya and Colman Domingo made the cut, but several of the show’s other major names were left out, including Sydney Sweeney, who had previously been nominated. After a long delay before the third and final season, the once-dominant HBO drama appeared to land with less force among voters this time.
What happened in reality and unscripted categories
In Reality Competition Program, Dancing With the Stars returned to the category for the first time in 10 years. The show campaigned hard and secured a nomination, edging out longtime category fixture The Amazing Race.
The field is sticky by Emmy standards, so that is a real shift. The Amazing Race has been a reliable presence for years, while Dancing With the Stars had to reassert itself with voters. This year, the ballroom won the argument.
Elsewhere in unscripted television, Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat could not match the Emmy strength of its first season. The hidden-camera reality project previously earned three nominations, but this time it received just one, for writing.
Bravo’s Summer House had better luck, landing a nomination for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program. The season’s attention-grabbing storyline involving Amanda Batula and West Wilson likely helped keep the show in the conversation, because subtlety has never been a requirement for reality television success.
Why Paramount+ had a quiet Emmy morning
Taylor Sheridan was once again largely absent from the nominations conversation, and Paramount+ ended the morning with only one nomination overall: a stunt nod for Tulsa King.
That was a notably slim showing given the streamer’s contenders. Michelle Pfeiffer’s role in The Madison had generated buzz, and Landman had a breakout second season. Neither translated into a broader Emmy presence for Paramount+.
For a streamer built on stars and franchise ambition, visibility still is not the same as awards traction. The Television Academy can admire a stunt sequence and still decline the rest of the invitation.
What the nominations suggest about the Emmy race
This year’s early Emmy picture is already messy in the familiar way: acclaimed performers missed, returning favorites lost ground, and a late-arriving horror series muscled into the room with 19 nominations.
