Back in December 2016, she explained that choice to Allure in very direct terms: “I just thought it was cool, like Cher or Prince.” Hard to argue with that logic. If one name works, it works.
Still, her middle name means something to her. Zendaya has previously said that Sam Levinson named her character Marie in the 2021 film Malcolm & Marie with her in mind.
“She was written for me,” Zendaya told The Hollywood Reporter at the time. “She was also written to the woman that I am and to the woman that I’m becoming.”
That history gives Holland’s casual use of “Maree” a little more weight. It wasn’t some big public declaration, which is probably why it landed as sweetly as it did. It sounded familiar, lived-in, and private, even while surrounded by cameras.
The couple’s public moments are usually limited
Zendaya, 29, and Holland, 30, have been linked for years after meeting during the chemistry read for 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. Since then, their relationship has existed in an unusual space: deeply visible to fans, but carefully protected by the people actually living it.
That balance has become part of how audiences understand them. They have shared major screen time, appeared together at high-profile events, and still avoided turning their personal life into a constant public performance.
Zendaya later addressed that tension in an April interview with The New York Times, speaking with her The Drama costar Robert Pattinson. She said public interest in the relationship is not exactly shocking.
“I do know that I’m a public person, and so is he,” she said. “I’m also aware that we’ve grown up in front of people and we’ve done movies where we fall in love with each other, so I really do understand that and I don’t want to dismiss that like, ‘Stay out of my business’ or whatever.”
Still, she said some boundaries are necessary.
“I try my best to be able to have things for myself and for him as well,” she added.
Zendaya has described feeling calm with Holland
In that same April interview, Zendaya got more personal about the relationship, describing what it feels like to recognize someone as a steady presence.
“There’s a certain feeling that I was able to experience when I knew that this is my person because I don’t feel nervous around them,” she told Pattinson. “I feel really peaceful and I feel really calm.”
She continued, “I feel like, ‘Oh, I actually feel more nervous when I’m away from you than when I’m with you.’ That’s when I was like, ‘Ah, that’s a good sign, me listening to my intuition or body.’”
That context is part of why a small red-carpet nickname became a story. It was not just that Holland called her “Maree.” It was the ease of it: him asking, her answering, both of them apparently already united around the important question of where to go for gelato after a Marvel premiere.
For two people whose relationship has often been watched from a distance, the moment gave fans a rare glimpse of something ordinary. And ordinary, in their case, is usually the point.
