The trailer shows the makeover goes further
The official trailer, also released July 13, offers a closer look at the physical transformation. The trailer makes clear that Cruise’s face is not the only thing rebuilt for the role.
One of the trailer’s early scenes shows him walking through a lavish closet wearing only boxers, revealing an enlarged prosthetic abdomen. The choice is striking because Cruise has spent decades turning physical control into a kind of personal brand. Here, the body is part of the character’s history, ego and decay.
In Digger, Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, an elderly oil magnate trying to fix an ecological crisis tied to his own actions. That setup gives the makeover more weight than a simple visual stunt. The character is built around contradiction: power and panic, guilt and self-importance, a man trying to clean up a disaster while still standing right in the middle of it.
Why Cruise says the role was different
Cruise has made a career out of pushing his body for movies, often in ways that make insurance departments sigh quietly into paperwork. But at a Q&A event in Los Angeles on July 9, he said Digger challenged him in a way he had not experienced before.
“I have never had something that could challenge me in this way and neither has Alejandro when we went in, ever,” Cruise said, according to The Hollywood Reporter, “and when you see this film, it’s totally original.”
The film is directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who made The Revenant. Iñárritu also described Cruise’s change as more than makeup and costuming.
“The transformation he went through was astonishing. ‘Alejandro, it took me 40 years to become this character,’ he told me once,” Iñárritu said in a video sent to the Los Angeles event. “And I think we both know what it means to carry an entire career into a single moment like this.”
He added, “We both knew that throughout our journeys, we had never done anything even close to this.”
Why the first look is getting attention
For audiences, the fascination is not just that Cruise looks different. It is that he looks deliberately stripped of the smooth, controlled image that has defined much of his screen presence.
The actor’s most recognizable roles often depend on intensity, speed and competence. Digger Rockwell appears to push in another direction: older, compromised, physically altered and morally tangled. That kind of role asks viewers to look past the familiar star machinery and sit with something messier.
The poster and trailer are designed to make that impossible to miss. The cowboy hat, the globe, the shovel, the prosthetics and the inflated confidence all point to a character who has lived loudly and now faces consequences on an equally large scale.
Digger arrives in theaters October 2.
