Texas Plane Crash Leaves One Dead in Laredo

Police said a private jet crashed on a highway in Laredo Tuesday night, killing one person, injuring five others on board, and sending five police officers to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

The aircraft, described by officials as a twin-jet Cessna, was traveling from Los Cabos International Airport in Mexico to an airport in Austin, Texas, when it reportedly suffered a mechanical failure. The National Transportation Safety Board is now investigating what caused the crash, because “mechanical failure” is the start of the explanation, not the end of it.

What happened on the highway in Laredo?

Video from the scene showed the jet flying low near traffic before dropping toward the highway. In one dashcam angle, a car continues along the road as the aircraft appears in the distance, then suddenly descends and crashes on the opposite side of the highway. Flames appear to rise almost immediately after impact.

Police said the aircraft also struck a vehicle traveling along the highway. Officials had not clarified whether anyone in that vehicle was injured.

At a press conference hours after the crash, a representative for the Laredo Police Department said one person had died. At that point, police said it was not yet clear whether the person killed had been on the plane or on the ground.

Motorists broke into the cockpit to pull people out

Several motorists who came upon the wreck stopped and ran toward the burning aircraft to help those trapped inside. According to officials and video from the scene, the bystanders used a sledgehammer and a shovel to break through the cockpit window.

That quick, improvised rescue effort helped remove people from the wreckage before emergency crews fully secured the scene. It was not tidy, polished, or remotely safe. It was also apparently necessary.

Five people who had been on board were injured. Five police officers were also transported to a hospital after inhaling smoke while responding to the crash.

Investigators are looking at the reported mechanical failure

Officials said the Cessna had departed Los Cabos International Airport and was headed to Austin when the emergency unfolded near Laredo. The aircraft’s reported mechanical failure will be a major focus for investigators, along with the flight path, maintenance records, pilot communications, weather, and any data from onboard systems.

The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the federal investigation. Investigators will document the crash site, interview witnesses, review air traffic control communications, and examine the aircraft’s components to determine whether a system failure, human factors, or another issue brought the jet down.

For now, the confirmed toll is one dead, five people on board injured, five officers treated for smoke inhalation, and at least one vehicle hit on the highway. The rest will depend on the evidence, which is less dramatic than the videos but far more useful.
