EntertainmentTenzing Apple TV Release Date Set for October

The Tenzing Apple TV release date is now fixed for October 16, following a limited theatrical run beginning October 9. Tom Hiddleston stars as New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary, but the film’s focus is firmly on Genden Phuntsok as Tenzing Norgay, the veteran Sherpa climber whose role in the 1953 Everest expedition was often treated as secondary by Western coverage. History can be selective when handing out top billing.

The biographical drama comes from Australian filmmaker Jennifer Peedom, making her narrative feature debut after years documenting mountains, climbers and the people who do the most dangerous work around them. Its reported running time is between 126 and 128 minutes, depending on the festival listing.

Who stars in Tenzing?

Hiddleston plays Hillary, while Chinese actor Genden Phuntsok takes the title role. Willem Dafoe portrays John Hunt, the British Army officer who led the expedition.

Apple has also confirmed two substantial supporting characters absent from some early descriptions of the film:

  • Caitríona Balfe plays expedition secretary Jill Henderson
  • Thinley Lhamo plays Tenzing’s wife, Dawa

The casting reflects the film’s wider attempt to present the ascent through Tenzing’s life, family and spiritual understanding of Chomolungma, rather than treating him merely as Hillary’s guide. The mountain may be familiar to much of the world as Everest, but the people living beneath it had names, beliefs and expertise long before a British expedition arrived with paperwork.

Tenzing’s son, Norbu Tenzing, serves as an executive producer. Peedom said the project developed from conversations with him after she made the 2015 documentary Sherpa. She later optioned Ed Douglas’s biography Tenzing: Hero of Everest, giving the production both a published foundation and direct involvement from the family.

Why Jennifer Peedom was chosen to direct

Tenzing is Peedom’s first fictional feature, although mountain filmmaking is hardly new territory for her. Her documentary credits include Miracle on Everest from 2008, Sherpa from 2015, Mountain from 2017 and Mountain Quest from 2021.

Peedom filmed around Mount Everest and in Kathmandu, placing the cast in the locations rather than asking a studio floor and several industrial fans to do all the work. Hiddleston described the process during a 2025 interview with Josh Horowitz.

“The extraordinary thing that Jen has done is she’s put us all in the environment,” he said. “We’ve actually just spent a month in Nepal and I’ve spent some time in the Khumbu Valley and in the foothills of Everest and in the Himalayas.”

The actor called the production “the adventure of a lifetime” and said Everest had fascinated him since childhood. His return to streaming follows two seasons of Marvel’s Loki on Disney Plus and his return as Jonathan Pine in the second season of the British thriller The Night Manager.

What happened during the 1953 Everest expedition?

Hillary and Tenzing became the first climbers confirmed to reach Everest’s summit on May 29, 1953. The achievement came during a large British expedition involving roughly 350 porters, 20 Sherpas and 10 lead climbers, according to National Geographic.

Tenzing was no inexperienced assistant drafted for a single attempt. He had already participated in six Everest expeditions before the successful climb, bringing extensive high-altitude knowledge to the partnership.

For years, speculation focused on which man stepped onto the summit first. Hillary received much of the attention in Western reporting, while both climbers initially declined to separate their achievement into individual claims. Tenzing later disclosed that Hillary had taken the first step onto the highest point.

The distinction never changed the essential fact that both men completed the final ascent together. Tenzing appears interested in correcting the unequal way their shared achievement was remembered, particularly the tendency to frame a Sherpa mountaineer as supporting personnel in his own story.

When will the film premiere and begin streaming?

The film held its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on September 5. Peedom attended alongside Hiddleston, Dafoe, Phuntsok, Balfe and Lhamo.

Its remaining release schedule is:

  • September 15: Canadian premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival
  • September 24: European premiere at the Zurich Film Festival
  • October 9: Limited theatrical release
  • October 16: Global streaming debut on Apple TV

Hiddleston, Dafoe and Peedom are expected to attend the Zurich screening. The Toronto date had previously been described in some coverage as the film’s debut, but the Telluride premiere occurred 10 days earlier. Festival calendars remain surprisingly capable of producing altitude-related confusion without leaving sea level.

What are critics saying about Tenzing?

Early reactions from Telluride have been mixed but broadly positive. Next Best Picture praised Phuntsok’s performance as powerful and described the production as an accessible, crowd-pleasing epic.

Another assessment from the outlet also identified Phuntsok as the film’s emotional center, while arguing that Hiddleston and Dafoe receive less substantial material and that the storytelling remains conventional until its final section. That suggests the film may rely on familiar biographical-drama machinery even as it tries to shift the historical perspective.

Peedom has said Norbu Tenzing supported her involvement because Sherpa demonstrated an understanding of Sherpa culture. His participation gives the film an important connection to the family, although the finished work will still face the obvious test: whether it genuinely centers Tenzing Norgay or simply gives an old expedition story a more considerate camera angle.
