The Spider-Man: Brand New Day box office opening did more than beat expectations. Sony and Marvel’s sequel collected an estimated $927 million worldwide in its first weekend, turning an already ambitious forecast into something that now looks almost cautious.
The total included $355 million in North America and $572 million from 66 international markets. According to the Associated Press, the film played on more than 73,500 screens overseas and delivered a record $168 million domestic opening day.
Globally, it ranks as the second-biggest debut in history, behind only 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which opened to $1.2 billion worldwide. In North America, Brand New Day also landed in second place, narrowly missing Endgame’s $357.1 million record.
These remained Sony’s Sunday estimates as of August 3, with no verified Monday totals yet available.
How badly did the forecasts miss?
Before release, tracking suggested a large opening, just not one this large. ComicBook.com, citing Deadline, reported early domestic projections of $180 million to $190 million. Boxoffice Pro later raised the expected range to between $230 million and $250 million.
The eventual $355 million estimate cleared even the higher forecast by at least $105 million. That is not a rounding error.
The result suggests prerelease models underestimated either late ticket buying, the breadth of the audience or both. Strong interest in premium formats also helped, while the film’s emotional continuation of Peter Parker’s story gave viewers more than another exercise in franchise maintenance.
It is the fourth solo Spider-Man film starring Tom Holland, but the first since 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home left Peter entirely alone. Holland previously said he and the filmmakers needed a reason to make another chapter beyond the obvious financial incentive. Audiences appear to have accepted the answer rather enthusiastically.
Which countries drove the global opening?
China delivered the largest international total with $121 million, a major result at a time when Hollywood releases have had inconsistent fortunes in the country. The market’s response could prove especially important to the film’s long-term prospects.
Other leading overseas openings included:
- United Kingdom: $49 million
- Mexico: $38.3 million
- India: $31.8 million
- France: $26.6 million
- South Korea: $25 million
- Brazil: $23.8 million
- Spain: $15.6 million
The film established opening-weekend records in several individual territories, including France, India, Brazil and Spain.
Its $572 million international launch alone approached the entire $640 million worldwide opening of 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, still the third-largest global debut. That gives some sense of the scale involved, in case the many zeros had started to lose meaning.
How did premium screens boost ticket sales?
Audiences also paid extra to see the 150-minute film in premium large formats. Brand New Day set format records with $10 million from Dolby screens in North America, $17 million globally through 4DX and $14.4 million worldwide from ScreenX.
It managed those results without access to domestic IMAX screens. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey had secured an exclusive North American IMAX engagement lasting at least three weeks, leaving Spider-Man to find other oversized options.
The sequel did play in IMAX across China, Japan and South Korea, where those screens contributed a combined $23 million. Losing the domestic network might normally limit a blockbuster’s opening ceiling. Here, demand simply moved to other formats.
That premium performance matters because higher ticket prices can substantially lift opening-weekend revenue. It also shows that audiences were not merely willing to attend. Many chose the most expensive available version.
What brought viewers back to Peter Parker?
Director Destin Daniel Cretton, whose credits include Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, picks up after Peter’s decision in No Way Home to erase himself from everyone’s memory.
As a mysterious entity threatens New York City, Peter is dealing with mutating powers and the personal cost of his choice. MJ, played by Zendaya, and Ned, played by Jacob Batalon, are building new lives at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology without remembering him.
The cast also includes Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Jon Bernthal as Punisher, Michael Mando as Scorpion and Marvin Jones III as Tombstone. Those appearances gave the film recognizable Marvel faces without returning to the multiverse-heavy structure of its predecessor.
Early reactions highlighted the more grounded approach. Variety reported that initial responses praised the story’s retreat from multiverse plotting, while critic Kevin Wozniak called it his favorite of Holland’s Spider-Man films. The movie earned a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score and an A grade from audiences surveyed by CinemaScore.
Cretton previously described the production as “the biggest, most rewarding film I’ve ever been a part of” and praised Holland’s “relentless work ethic” and “fearless performances.”
Could Brand New Day reach $2 billion?
A $927 million start puts the film within reach of a rare milestone, though opening weekends do not guarantee final totals. Only seven films have passed $2 billion worldwide.
Spider-Man: No Way Home finished with roughly $1.9 billion in 2021 despite not receiving a release in China. With Brand New Day already earning $121 million there, the new sequel has a route past its predecessor if it maintains audience interest.
Its strong reviews, positive audience score and limited immediate competition should help it remain prominent through the rest of the summer. The size of its debut also reflects the continuing appeal of Peter Parker when the spectacle remains tied to recognizable emotional stakes: isolation, sacrifice and the painful consequences of trying to protect other people.
Producer Amy Pascal said audiences had embraced Cretton’s “bold, creative and deeply emotional vision,” adding that the story “never lost sight of what makes Peter Parker so enduring: his humanity.”
The opening numbers are historic, but that human element may explain why viewers showed up in such extraordinary numbers. Spider-Man can battle enormous threats. Peter Parker still has to live with what saving everyone costs him.
