Netflix has put a firmer date on one of anime’s most-watched remake projects. The One Piece, Wit Studio’s new take on Eiichiro Oda’s pirate epic, is now set to debut on the streamer in February 2027, with the full season dropping at once.
Season 1 will run for seven episodes, with an expected total runtime of roughly 300 minutes. That gives the remake considerably more space per episode than the original TV anime, which has been running for decades and is built around a very different broadcast model.
The East Blue story gets room to breathe
The remake will begin where One Piece begins: the East Blue saga, following Monkey D. Luffy as he sets out to become King of the Pirates.
The first season is set to adapt the opening 50 chapters of Oda’s manga, taking the story up to Luffy’s meeting with Sanji at the Baratie. That gives the season a clean early arc rather than trying to sprint through the full opening stretch of the series. A wise choice, considering One Piece is not exactly short-form storytelling.
Early promotional material has also pointed to Luffy’s childhood in Windmill Village, including scenes at Partys Bar with Shanks and the Red-Hair Pirates. Those moments are foundational to Luffy’s origin, and they will give fans an early read on how Wit Studio plans to handle the emotional beats as well as the action.
Who is making the remake
The One Piece is being produced with Shueisha, Fuji Television Network, and Toei Animation, the same companies behind the long-running anime adaptation.
Wit Studio is leading the animation, with Attack on Titan director Masashi Koizuka heading the project. Character designs are being handled by Kyoji Asano, known for work on Spy x Family.
Netflix has not released full footage yet, but Wit Studio says the internal confidence is already high.
“Although only a small amount of information about The One Piece has been revealed so far, the strength of each cut being built up by our core staff is already translating into powerful animation,” the studio said.
“We have not released any footage yet, but we are confident that it is something we can proudly present. We hope many people will watch and enjoy it. Thank you for your support.”
Why this matters
Oda’s original manga had surpassed 600 million copies sold worldwide as of March 2026, placing it among the best-selling series in publishing history. Any new version of One Piece is therefore not just another anime announcement. It is a major test of how a legacy franchise can be reintroduced to viewers who may know the title but not have the time, or the stamina, to begin the existing anime from episode one.
With the February 2027 window, seven-episode count, and first-season scope now confirmed, the next key reveal is simple: footage. Netflix and Wit Studio have told fans when the voyage begins. Now they need to show what this new ship actually looks like in motion.
