A pair of Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies are taking issue with The Rip, the Netflix film from Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s production company Artists Equity.
According to reports, deputies Jonathan Santana and Jason Smith have sued Artists Equity, claiming the movie unfairly harmed the reputations of real officers connected to a 2016 South Florida drug bust.
The lawsuit centers on a real 2016 case
The Rip was inspired by a drug case in Miami Lakes. Santana and Smith reportedly helped crack that case in 2016, leading to the seizure of more than $20 million.
Santana told NBC 7News the film has led people to accuse him of stealing money since its January release.
“When you rip something, you’re stealing something,” Santana said. “We never stole a dollar.”
