Nicolas Cage’s grey hair took centre stage this weekend as the 62-year-old actor arrived at a Los Angeles event with his wife, Riko Shibata. After years of colouring his naturally dark hair, Cage appeared ready to let the silver do the work.
The Oscar-winning actor paired his fully grey hair with a matching beard, blue tuxedo jacket with satin lapels, slightly unbuttoned white shirt and black trousers. He also wore sunglasses, because even a major hair reveal must observe standard celebrity procedure.
Shibata, 31, held his hand as they posed for photographers. She wore a cream coat with sheer sleeves and styled her dark hair straight.
Where did Nicolas Cage reveal his new look?
The couple attended the opening night of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles. The 11-acre campus, created by filmmaker George Lucas, includes galleries, theatres and restaurants.
Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton served as a co-chair and attended with his girlfriend, Kim Kardashian. Oprah Winfrey and Katy Perry were also among the prominent guests celebrating the museum’s launch.
Cage has tried a considerable number of hairstyles during his career. His early roles featured the thick, untidy hair familiar from the 1980s, followed by longer styles in the 1990s. For the 2002 comedy-drama Adaptation, he wore a thinning ginger wig to play screenwriter Charlie Kaufman and his fictional twin brother, Donald.
In 2022, Cage briefly appeared with bright cherry-red hair, prompting the expected wave of startled online reactions. His natural colour is dark brown, although he has reportedly dyed it in recent years as it began turning grey. The latest appearance suggests he has now retired the dye, at least for the moment.
How did Nicolas Cage meet Riko Shibata?
Cage met Shibata in Japan in 2019 through mutual friends while filming Prisoners of the Ghostland, which was released in 2021. Shibata, also an actor, appeared briefly in the film as a “mannequin woman.”
He later said their shared interest in animals helped convince him that the relationship had potential. In a 2021 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Cage recalled asking whether she had any pets.
“She said, ‘Yes, I have flying squirrels.’ She had two sugar gliders,” he said. “I thought, ‘That’s it. This, this could work out.’”
The pair married at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas on February 16, 2021. Cage confirmed the marriage shortly afterwards, saying: “It’s true, and we are very happy.”
Their ceremony was described as small and intimate. They selected the date to honour the birthday of Shibata’s late father.
Has Nicolas Cage addressed hair transplant rumours?
The couple’s regular public appearances have documented Cage’s changing look, while also keeping speculation about his hair alive. Some fans and hair restoration experts have suggested that his hair appeared denser in his 50s than it did in his 40s.
Reports have also claimed that custom lace-front wigs and hairpieces were used for film productions and public appearances to manage thinning hair and receding temples. Cage has never confirmed that he underwent a hair transplant or publicly addressed the rumours.
Wigs, of course, have long been part of his professional life. His screen roles have required everything from long hair to elaborate hairpieces, making it difficult to separate personal styling from costume work. Hollywood has created more complicated mysteries, but perhaps not many involving this much adhesive.
What has Cage said about getting older?
Although Cage has stayed quiet about hair restoration claims, he has spoken candidly about ageing and the changes he has made to his lifestyle.
During an appearance on The New York Times podcast The Interview, he reflected on the impulsive spending that once defined his public image.
“It’s no secret that I have, over the years, particularly early on, perhaps, had a lack of impulse control and probably shouldn’t have bought that car or shouldn’t have bought that property or whatever it was,” he said.
Cage described his current life as “extraordinarily boring” and “very monastic,” adding that he avoids risks whenever possible. His priorities now centre on work and raising August, the daughter he and Shibata welcomed in September 2022.
He said he wants August “to have a happy and healthy life,” adding: “That is my focus. That, and when I work. That’s it.”
Cage also has two adult sons, Weston Cage and Kal-El Cage, from previous relationships. For now, family life, film work and a noticeably lower-maintenance hair colour appear to be the programme.
