“The individual who entered the court area during Game 1 of The Finals was arrested and will be banned for life from all NBA arenas,” an NBA spokesman said in a news release obtained by NBC News. “A second individual will also receive a lifetime ban for his role in the incident.”

The league did not offer additional details in that statement about the second person’s role. The league’s message was blunt: if your plan involves entering the playing area during a Finals game, expect the consequences to last longer than the photo would have.

Wembanyama said he did not know how to react

After the game, Wembanyama addressed the moment during a post-game press conference and said the encounter caught him off guard.

“I've never been in that situation,” the 22-year-old said. “I didn't I didn't know how to act.”

He also compared the surprise to another unusual Spurs home-game visitor from his rookie season.

“It really surprised me,” he continued, “almost as much as that time where a bat crushed the court.”

That was a reference to a January 2024 incident, during Wembanyama’s first season with San Antonio, when a bat flew around the court inside the arena. The Spurs’ mascot, The Coyote, stepped in wearing a Batman costume and eventually pinned the bat down with a net, earning loud cheers from the crowd. The Knicks won Game 1 as celebrities watched

Once play resumed, the Spurs could not turn the disruption into momentum. After a close game across all four quarters, the Knicks finished ahead 105-95.

The matchup also drew several well-known Knicks supporters, including Ben Stiller, Spike Lee and Timothée Chalamet. Their presence made sense for a Finals stage in New York, though unlike the banned spectators, they managed to support the team from the seats. A radical concept, apparently.
