The Kylian Mbappé Ceuta shirt controversy began before Real Madrid’s 3-2 La Liga victory at Elche on Tuesday, when Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Ibrahima Konaté wore tribute T-shirts partially rolled up rather than fully displayed.

The shirts carried the message “we are all Ceutans” in support of residents of Ceuta, the Spanish territory in North Africa facing a humanitarian and migration crisis. Every other Real Madrid player, along with the Elche squad, wore the shirt as intended. The three folded versions were therefore not especially difficult to notice.

Why Ultras Sur demanded apologies

Ultras Sur, a Real Madrid supporters’ group often associated with the far right, issued a statement on X late Wednesday describing the players’ conduct as “unacceptable”.

“We are certain that every Real Madrid supporter and every Spaniard is ashamed of the image given by these three individuals,” the group said. It demanded “public apologies” from Mbappé, Vinícius and Konaté.

The statement also criticised Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez for remaining silent. Ultras Sur has been in conflict with Pérez since the club banned the group from the Santiago Bernabéu more than a decade ago, so the latest complaint arrives with some well-established institutional hostility attached.

La Liga President Javier Tebas added his own criticism on Wednesday. He said the players had failed to wear the tribute properly, arguing that “putting it half on is the same as not wearing it”.

Mbappé says he wanted to remember migrants

Mbappé later explained that his decision was not intended as a rejection of Ceuta or its residents. Speaking to Spanish sports newspaper AS, he expressed support for the territory while saying he also wanted to acknowledge migrants who had died or remained in dangerous conditions.

“The first thing I want to say is that I have complete solidarity with Ceuta and all the victims,” he said.

“But I also wanted to make a gesture and express my thoughts for all the immigrants who have lost their lives and who are also living in difficult conditions.”

Neither Vinícius nor Konaté was quoted in the reported response, and Real Madrid had not publicly addressed the demand from Ultras Sur.

What is happening in Ceuta

Tens of thousands of migrants entered Ceuta from Morocco on July 30 and 31. Most returned within hours, but several thousand remained in the territory as local services struggled to cope.

Residents have reported migrants camping on beaches and sleeping in streets. Conditions have deteriorated, increasing tensions between local people and those who crossed the border during the crisis.

Scores of migrants also died while attempting the journey in July. The Moroccan Association for Human Rights, a nongovernmental organisation, estimates that at least 141 people lost their lives.

The tribute shirt was designed to show solidarity with Ceuta amid those pressures. Mbappé’s explanation suggests he wanted the gesture to include the migrants as well, though rolling up the message produced a rather different public debate.
