Love Island USA producer James Barker has died in Fiji, where the Peacock reality series was filming its eighth season. He was 40.
ITV America and Peacock confirmed to Variety that Barker died last week after an unexpected medical emergency. The companies said he will be honored in Tuesday’s episode of Love Island USA, which is currently airing on Peacock.

In a joint statement, ITV America and Peacock described Barker’s death as a loss felt well beyond the set in Fiji.
“James’ unimaginable loss has been deeply felt across not just the entire Love Island USA production, but throughout all of ITV and Peacock,” the companies said. “He was a beloved and greatly valued member of our collective family whose kindness, talent and dedication left an indelible mark on all of us and everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working with him. We extend our heartfelt condolences to James’ partner, family, friends and colleagues.”
The statement also pointed to the range of Barker’s work on the series, noting his role across both production and post-production, as well as his oversight of the show’s distinctive soundtrack. On a program built from editing rhythms, music cues, and very carefully timed emotional chaos, that is a key part of how the show comes together.
His role on Love Island USA
Barker had worked on Love Island USA since 2020, beginning as a story producer before rising to executive producer for the most recent three seasons. Across his time with the franchise, he worked on 110 episodes.
His work touched the parts of reality television that viewers feel even when they do not see the mechanics: the story structure, the pacing, the post-production choices, and the music that helps turn a villa argument or a recoupling into a television moment.
Barker also served as an executive producer on Love Island Games and as a consulting producer on Love Island: Beyond the Villa, extending his role across the broader Love Island franchise at Peacock.
A career built across reality television
Before his work with Love Island USA, Barker began his television career in 2011 at Leftfield Pictures. His early credits included Counting Cars, Forged in Fire, and Pawn Stars, shows that helped establish a long-running lane in unscripted television.
He later worked as a story producer on Queer Eye, another reality series where the emotional arc matters as much as the format. That kind of experience helps explain why colleagues highlighted not only Barker’s technical skill, but also his judgment and care behind the scenes.
The eighth season of Love Island USA continues to stream on Peacock. Tuesday’s episode is expected to include the tribute to Barker, putting his name before the audience that saw the work he helped shape.
