The Fast & Furious TV series has moved beyond development and received a full series order from Peacock. The streamer announced the decision Thursday, several months after Vin Diesel first disclosed the project during NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation in May.
Peacock plans to launch the scripted show by 2028. That timing would place it alongside the franchise’s next film, Fast Forever, which Universal Pictures has scheduled for release on March 17, 2028. Apparently, one very fast vehicle for the franchise was not enough.
Universal Television, part of Universal Studio Group, will produce the series.
Who is making the Peacock series?
Diesel will serve as an executive producer through One Race alongside Sam Vincent. The production team also includes Original Film’s Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty, plus Jeff Kirschenbaum and Chris Morgan of Chris Morgan Productions.
Mike Daniels and Wolfe Coleman will act as co-showrunners, write the pilot and executive produce. Daniels’ credits include Sons of Anarchy, Shades of Blue and The Rockford Files. Coleman previously worked on Shades of Blue and 9-1-1: Lone Star.
Peacock has not announced casting, plot details or which established characters might appear. Diesel suggested in May that television would allow the franchise to expand the stories of its familiar characters, but the exact route remains under wraps. For a saga built around speed, it is taking the responsible approach to revealing details.
Why is Fast & Furious moving into television?
During NBCUniversal’s May presentation, Diesel said fans had spent years asking for more stories from the franchise and its established characters. He explained that he wanted to wait until the television expansion could preserve the qualities that made the films internationally successful.
Diesel credited NBCUniversal Entertainment and Studios chair Donna Langley with giving him confidence that the characters, worldwide appeal and recurring family theme would be protected on television.
He also made a broader announcement than Thursday’s single series order, telling the audience: “Peacock is launching four shows from the ‘Fast and Furious’ universe.”
Peacock has not yet provided further information about the other three projects Diesel referenced. For now, only the newly ordered scripted series has been formally detailed.
Has the franchise been on television before?
This will not be the property’s first trip to the small screen. Netflix previously released the animated series Fast & Furious Spy Racers, which ran for six seasons from 2019 to 2021.
The larger franchise began on June 22, 2001, when Universal Pictures released The Fast and the Furious. Set in the Los Angeles street-racing scene, the film starred Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto, Paul Walker as Brian O’Conner, Jordana Brewster as Mia Toretto and Michelle Rodriguez as Letty Ortiz.
What started as a street-racing thriller expanded into a global action franchise involving elaborate heists, international espionage and increasingly ambitious uses of motor vehicles. The original film reaches its 25th anniversary in 2026, while the television series and Fast Forever are both being lined up for 2028.
