Kirsten Dunst’s breakout role came with major prestige, major stars and one scene that has never sat quite as smoothly as the film’s gothic lighting.
In 1994, Dunst appeared in Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles opposite Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. She played Claudia, a child vampire whose mind ages while her body does not. The role made her a serious young actor almost overnight, earning her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
It also required her to perform a scripted kiss with Pitt, who played Louis de Pointe du Lac. Pitt was 30 during production. Dunst was 11 for much of filming and 12 when the film was released.
Dunst said the scene was not romantic to her
Dunst has spoken more than once about how strange the moment felt from her perspective as a child actor. In later interviews, she pushed back on the idea that kissing one of Hollywood’s biggest leading men was some sort of enviable milestone.
“Everyone at the time was like, ‘You’re so lucky you kissed Brad Pitt,’ but I thought it was disgusting,” she told Bullett magazine. “I didn’t kiss anyone else until I was 16, I think. I was a late bloomer.”
