Kate Garraway and Liam Halligan’s relationship has brought the television presenter some welcome happiness after years of illness, caregiving and bereavement. It has also brought hostile comments from strangers who apparently believe they should approve the schedule of her private life.
A source close to Garraway told The Mirror that the 59-year-old presenter was deeply upset by the reaction after she reposted a group photograph featuring Halligan, 57, from a mutual friend’s birthday celebration on July 24.
Some social media users accused Garraway of having “milked” the death of her husband, Derek Draper. Others criticized her for dating someone who had known him. The comments followed years in which Garraway publicly documented Draper’s severe health problems after he contracted Covid-19 in March 2020.
Why the criticism has been so painful
The source said Garraway had tried to avoid reading the worst responses but struggled to understand the hostility.
“She went through such heartbreak with Derek, and now she’s seeing someone who is really supportive and kind to her,” the source said. “She just wanted people to be pleased for her, and she thinks she deserves some happiness at long last.”
They added that the relationship remained in its early stages and that those close to Garraway supported it.
“She’s so upset that some people can’t let her enjoy something good and positive in her life,” the source said.
No new public statement from Garraway, Halligan or her representative had emerged by August 5. Metro contacted Garraway’s representative for comment.
The reaction reflects an uncomfortable consequence of Garraway sharing her family’s experience so openly. Her documentaries gave viewers a close look at love, illness and the enormous demands placed on unpaid family caregivers. That visibility created empathy, but it also encouraged some viewers to behave as though they had acquired decision-making rights over what came next.
When did Garraway confirm the relationship?
The birthday photograph was widely framed as Garraway and Halligan “going public,” but it was not the first confirmation of their romance.
At the Chelsea Flower Show in May 2026, Garraway told The Mirror that the relationship was “lovely.” She also said the pair had barely managed to find time for a proper date and added that she did not want to “jinx it.” They were romantically linked earlier in the year after she attended a performance by Halligan’s band in Essex, and they have since been seen on trips to France and Italy.
Halligan addressed the reports during an April appearance on Mark Dolan’s TalkTV radio show. The economics journalist, who served as economics and business editor at GB News until summer 2024, explained that he had known Garraway for about 20 years and had also known Draper.
“I’ve known Kate for a long time. I knew her late husband Derek, of course I did; I was a correspondent for the Financial Times in the late nineties,” he said.
Halligan added that both he and Garraway had become single “against our wishes.” He described them as good friends and said the relationship was in its “early days,” adding: “We’ll see what happens.”
How Derek Draper’s illness shaped public interest
Draper, a former political adviser, died aged 56 in January 2024. He had contracted Covid-19 in March 2020 and spent 13 months in hospital. The virus caused lasting damage to his organs, and he required extensive care after returning home.
Garraway documented the family’s experience in three ITV films:
- Finding Derek
- Caring for Derek
- Derek’s Story
Each production won the National Television Award for authored documentary. Their success reflected how strongly viewers connected with the family’s story, particularly the realities of long-term care and the uncertainty surrounding serious post-Covid complications.
The practical cost was also severe. Sky News reported that basic care at home reached £4,000 a week before therapy expenses. Garraway later described spending about £16,000 a month and building up substantial debt.
Those details explain why audiences became invested in her life, but they do not make her grief or future relationships communal property. Garraway has previously said she did not want to live the rest of her life without romantic love. Her relationship with Halligan appears to be a gradual step toward that possibility, not the abrupt transformation suggested by coverage centered on one photograph.
A private relationship under public scrutiny
Garraway’s connection with viewers was built through unusually vulnerable reporting about her marriage, Draper’s health and the pressure on their family. That openness helped bring attention to caregivers who often face emotional exhaustion and extraordinary costs with limited support.
It also left her exposed to a familiar contradiction. Public figures are praised for discussing grief honestly, then criticized when their lives do not follow somebody else’s preferred version of mourning.
The available timeline shows no sudden announcement. Halligan discussed their friendship in April, Garraway confirmed the romance in May, and the July birthday image simply showed them within a group of friends. The relationship has developed cautiously, with both describing it as new.
For Garraway, the emotional stakes are straightforward. She lost her husband after nearly four years dominated by medical crises and care responsibilities. Finding companionship two years after his death does not erase that history. It merely means her life has continued, which should not require permission from a comments section.
