Julie Bowen’s dating life has entered a new chapter, four years after the Modern Family star publicly declared that she was finished with romance. In an interview published on September 26, the 56-year-old revealed that she now has a new man in her life, although she is keeping his identity private.

“I have a lovely friend,” Bowen told People, choosing a description that reveals just enough while leaving the internet with very little to investigate.

What Julie Bowen wants in a partner

Bowen said her unnamed partner has the qualities she values most: intelligence and a sense of humor.

“I need smart and funny,” she said. “I don’t care what people look like, though he happens to be good-looking.”

The Happy Gilmore actress then clarified her priorities with admirable efficiency: “I like the brains.”

Bowen did not share how long the pair have been together or offer further details about the relationship. For now, the public gets smart, funny and attractive. A complete résumé will apparently not be issued.

Why Bowen previously gave up on dating

Bowen was married to real estate investor Scott Phillips from 2004 until their separation in 2017. Their divorce was finalized in 2018. The former couple share three sons: Oliver, 19, and 17-year-old twins Gustave and John.

After the divorce, Bowen described herself as “very single” and said she had closed the door on dating. She even bought herself a dog to mark what she considered her retirement from romantic relationships.

“That dog, that was my retirement gift to me,” she said during a 2022 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “I was like, ‘I’m done. I’m done.’”

Retirement, as it turns out, was not permanent.

What Bowen has said about sexuality and privacy

Bowen has also spoken openly about sexuality while arguing that people should not be required to explain their private lives to the public.

During a 2022 episode of the Quitters podcast, the Emmy winner said, “I’m straight. I’ve always been straight,” before recalling that she had once been in love with a woman who did not return her feelings.

“She liked women, but she didn’t like me in that way,” Bowen said. Because the relationship never developed, she added, she did not have to reconsider how she defined her sexuality.

Her broader point was less about labels and more about personal boundaries.

“I hope people don’t always have to come out,” she said. “What you do with your body should not be the first thing we know about people, or care about. That’s your business.”

Bowen appears to be applying the same principle to her current relationship. She has confirmed that someone special exists, praised his mind and looks, and kept everything else where she believes it belongs: private.
