“If you're the one who's being heartbroken, you're the winner. Because if you go around your life and you're breaking hearts, let's say, you're a loser,” Lopez said.
She did add a little realism to that moral accounting: “I've been on both sides. We all do that. But if you're that person, you're never learning anything.”
Her larger point was that heartbreak makes people do the emotional accounting they’d rather skip, which is inconvenient, but occasionally useful.
“I just feel like the biggest growth spurts I’ve had emotionally, mentally, psychologically have always come from a heartbreak,” she explained. “And that’s not just in romantic relationships, that’s in work heartbreaks, all of it.”
What she says people learn after a split
Lopez described breakups as the moment when people finally ask themselves harder questions, whether they like it or not.
“It’s the only time you dig. You’re like, ‘What the f--k happened? How do I do this? Why do I keep doing this? Or why didn’t that happen? What could I have done better?’” she said. “You change yourself completely.”
That framing fits the way Lopez has often discussed reinvention across her career, from music and film to live performance. Her point here was not that heartbreak is pleasant, because even the most optimistic celebrity sound bite has limits. It was that pain can become information if someone is willing to examine it.
Lopez has been married four times. Before Affleck, she was married to Ojani Noa, Cris Judd and Marc Anthony. She and Anthony share 18-year-old twins, Max and Emme. Lopez was also previously engaged to Alex Rodriguez.
What Lopez looks for in a partner now
Asked what she wants in a potential partner, Lopez did not offer a narrow physical type. She made the case for range.
“I don't discriminate. I like skinny guys. I like a chunk around the middle,” she said. “I like beards, I like clean shaven, it doesn't matter. It's the person inside.”
It was a notably unfussy answer from someone whose dating life has been picked apart in public for decades. Lopez’s comments suggest she is less interested in a checklist than in whether a person is emotionally right for her.
That does not mean she is vague about boundaries. In October 2025, Lopez appeared on a red carpet beside Affleck while promoting their movie musical Kiss of the Spider Woman, nine months after their divorce was settled. Days later, during an interview with Howard Stern, she made clear that being cordial in public does not mean leaving every emotional door open.
“Once I’m done, you’re dead to me,” she said.
So, yes, Lopez may recommend celebrating a breakup. Just do not confuse the party with an invitation back in.
