Jason Bateman’s Monaco arrest story surfaced on a new episode of the podcast SmartLess, where the actor told co-hosts Will Arnett and Sean Hayes that a casino night in Europe once ended with him being arrested for being “drunk and disorderly.”
Bateman said as much himself, on his own show, while describing a night that now sounds like the kind of story celebrities eventually hand over to podcast listeners.
What Jason Bateman said happened in Monaco
Bateman told Arnett and Hayes that he had been at a casino in Monaco when the night moved from glamorous to administrative. According to his account, he was dressed in what he called a “nice little leopard outfit,” carrying casino chips, and had been drinking cheap Champagne.
He described himself as “all banged up” and said he got absolutely “rocked” before being arrested for “drunk and disorderly” behavior.
The image, as celebrity anecdotes go, is extremely specific: Monaco, casino chips, leopard print, cheap Champagne. Not exactly a quiet evening with mineral water and responsible footwear.
How the SmartLess hosts reacted
The story landed with his SmartLess co-hosts, which is not shocking. Will Arnett and Sean Hayes were listening to Bateman describe a scene that already sounded like a lost chapter from a very chaotic travel memoir.
One of the hosts joked that Bateman’s description should become the title of his biography. Given the material involved, the publishing department would at least have options.
Bateman did not frame the story as a recent incident. The podcast discussion treated it as an old episode from his life, retold with the distance of someone who can now laugh at it rather than, say, explain it to local authorities.
Why the story is getting attention now
Bateman is best known for playing tightly wound or morally complicated characters in projects including Arrested Development and Ozark. This story, by contrast, involves him describing himself as the problem in the room.
The story is making the rounds because it has all the usual ingredients of a celebrity podcast moment:
- A famous person volunteering an old story
- A luxury setting with a bad decision attached
- A visual detail too strange to be invented casually
- Co-hosts reacting in real time
For now, all we really have is Bateman’s own telling on SmartLess. No extra mystery needs to be added. The man said he was arrested in Monaco while drunk, disorderly, and dressed in leopard print. Sometimes the quote does the work all by itself.
