Jada Pinkett Smith Legal Fees Challenged

CelebrityJada Pinkett Smith Legal Fees Challenged

Will Smith's former friend Bilaal Salaam is asking a judge to revisit an order requiring him to pay more than $32,000 in Jada Pinkett Smith's legal fees, saying he is broke, receiving public assistance and homeless.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Salaam filed a request for reconsideration after Pinkett Smith won attorney’s fees tied to the dismissal of his emotional distress claims against her. He is not arguing that the court invented the bill out of thin air. His argument is simpler: he says he cannot pay it.

Why Bilaal Salaam says he cannot pay

In the filing, Salaam says he is “certified homeless” and receives welfare benefits. On that basis, he asked the court to either sharply reduce the amount he owes or create some kind of payment plan.

That is the practical fight now before the court. Pinkett Smith secured a fee award of more than $32,000 after convincing the judge to dismiss Salaam’s emotional distress claims. Salaam acknowledges the fee order exists, but says the current amount is beyond his means.

For anyone keeping score at home, “I owe it, but I cannot pay it” is not the same as “I do not owe it.” Courts tend to notice that distinction.

What the original lawsuit claimed

The fight over fees comes from Salaam’s earlier lawsuit against Jada Pinkett Smith. TMZ previously reported that he accused her of having friends threaten him after he allegedly refused to help Will Smith deal with the fallout from the infamous Oscars incident involving Chris Rock.

That incident, in which Will Smith slapped Rock onstage during the Academy Awards, created a prolonged public and professional mess for Smith. Salaam claimed he was pulled into that orbit and then threatened after declining to assist.

Pinkett Smith denied all allegations of wrongdoing. She then succeeded in getting Salaam’s emotional distress claims dismissed, which led to the attorney’s fee award he is now trying to reduce or restructure.

What happens next

The court will have to decide whether Salaam’s financial condition justifies changing the fee order. His filing asks for relief based on homelessness, welfare benefits and inability to pay, not on a fresh claim that Pinkett Smith should never have received fees in the first place.

That leaves the judge with a narrower question: whether the existing judgment should stand as written, be reduced, or become a payment plan. Not glamorous, but this is where many celebrity-adjacent lawsuits eventually end up: less red carpet, more invoice management.
