The J Balvin and Valentina Ferrer split is official after nearly 10 years together. Ferrer announced on Instagram on Sept. 16 that she and the Colombian singer, whose full name is José Álvaro Osorio Balvín, had decided to end their relationship.

The couple share a 5-year-old son, Río, who Ferrer said remains their priority as they adjust to life apart.

“After sharing so many years and important moments together, José and I have decided to take separate paths,” the Argentine model wrote in a statement translated from Spanish.

She described the breakup as “a decision made out of love, respect and the desire to do what is best for our family,” adding: “Our priority will be continuing to be there for Río with all our love.”

What Valentina Ferrer said about the breakup

Ferrer did not give a reason for the separation, keeping the announcement focused on the family rather than offering the internet a detailed case file.

“We are moving through this process calmly,” she said, “and are profoundly grateful for the understanding and respect shown in this very personal moment for us.”

J Balvin, best known for songs including “Mi Gente,” had not publicly addressed the breakup at the time of Ferrer’s announcement.

The pair met while filming the music video for Balvin’s 2017 single “Sigo Extrañándote.” They began dating shortly afterward and later welcomed Río in 2021.

Their relationship generally remained private, although both occasionally shared family photos and glimpses of their life together on social media.

Why fans had already suspected a split

Ferrer’s statement followed several days of online speculation about her recent TikTok posts. Six days before confirming the breakup, she uploaded a video featuring Karol G’s “Alguien Que Te Amaba,” whose title translates to “Someone Who Loved You.” The song deals with the end of a relationship, which was enough to activate the usual social media investigation unit.

“I feel like she’s talking to us in code,” one commenter wrote in Spanish. Another asked whether Ferrer was trying to tell followers something.

A separate user offered encouragement, writing that what hurt Ferrer now would eventually make her “a wiser and stronger woman.” The comments proved unusually accurate, although Ferrer herself did not confirm whether the song choice had anything to do with the separation.

Their final family posts before the announcement

The last time Balvin and Ferrer featured each other on their social media accounts was during a family holiday in August. Their posts included photographs with Río amid hills, mountains and lakes.

Balvin shared his carousel on Aug. 24 with a praying-hands emoji. Ferrer captioned her own post, “Connecting with nature as a family.”

Neither post suggested publicly that a breakup announcement was approaching, and Ferrer did not disclose when the couple made the decision to separate. For now, both appear to be keeping the details private while concentrating on co-parenting their son.
