CelebrityHayden Panettiere On Daughter Kaya Claims

Hayden Panettiere daughter Kaya rumors have followed the actor for years, and she is now pushing back directly. On Monday’s episode of the “On Purpose” podcast, Panettiere rejected the claim that she “abandoned” her 11-year-old daughter while dealing with addiction and postpartum depression in 2018.

“The idea that anybody would think that I would just give away my child and be OK with it is heartbreaking,” the “Heroes” alum said.

“It couldn’t be further from the truth,” she added. “It became this horrible cycle for years of battling depression and anxiety and alcoholism and substance abuse and just me trying to find my way back.”

Why Panettiere says the situation was misunderstood

Panettiere, 36, said she “completely lost” herself during that period. She explained that her ex-fiancé, Wladimir Klitschko, asked for Kaya to live with him full-time in Ukraine when the child was 2.

That request, she said, did not land gently.

“I did not have a good reaction to it,” Panettiere said. “I went like mother lion. I would’ve burnt the world down for my child. So that was incredibly difficult.”

It is the kind of family decision that becomes brutally flattened once it hits public conversation. Online, “custody arrangement during a health crisis” often gets translated into one much harsher word. Panettiere’s point was that the reality was not nearly that simple, or that cruel.

Kaya built a life in Ukraine

Panettiere said that during their time apart, Kaya developed a “beautiful life” with friends, school, and extracurricular activities. By the time Panettiere said she had become healthy again, she felt that moving her daughter away from that life would not have been fair.

“So by the time I finally got healthy, I felt like it would have been unfair of me to and selfish of me to try and pull her out and away from this life that she had created,” she said.

The “Nashville” star added that Kaya has learned five languages and enjoys horseback riding. In other words, her daughter was not waiting in limbo while adults sorted themselves out, which is a useful detail in a story that has often been reduced to a single accusation.

“I know in my heart that she feels supported,” Panettiere said. “I have an incredible relationship with her. I go to travel as much as I can to see her. I do spend a lot of time on FaceTime with her.”

She described their bond as both “intense” and “incredible,” adding, “In no way [does] she feel abandoned.”

She also addressed treatment claims

During the same podcast appearance, Panettiere also challenged another public assumption: that she had been “forced” into treatment. According to the actor, she was the one who first sought help.

That clarification matters because the public version of celebrity recovery stories tends to arrive pre-sorted into neat categories: crisis, intervention, redemption, repeat. Real life, inconveniently for headline writers, is messier and less efficient.

Panettiere’s comments framed her recovery as something she actively pursued, not something imposed on her from the outside.

A brief timeline of Panettiere and Klitschko

Panettiere and Klitschko began dating in 2009. Their relationship was on and off before they got engaged in 2013.

The following year, Panettiere announced that she and Klitschko were expecting their first child together. She gave birth to Kaya in December 2014.

The couple separated in August 2018. A few months later, Panettiere began dating Brian Hickerson, from whom she has since split.

Panettiere’s latest comments do not present the years since 2018 as easy or uncomplicated. They do, however, make one thing very clear: she does not accept the narrative that distance from Kaya meant abandonment.
