Gwyneth Paltrow on Her Brad Pitt Relationship

CelebrityGwyneth Paltrow on Her Brad Pitt Relationship

Gwyneth Paltrow says her Brad Pitt relationship began, at least from her perspective, in a cinema. Years before they met, she watched him in Thelma & Louise and reached a straightforward conclusion: he was “the most handsome man.” Hollywood later arranged the introduction, as Hollywood occasionally does.

Speaking with Benny Blanco and Lil Dicky on Friends Keep Secrets on Sept. 8, Paltrow recalled seeing the 1991 film while growing up. Her distant crush became considerably less distant when she and Pitt were cast as a married couple in David Fincher’s 1995 thriller Se7en.

“I get cast in the movie with Brad, and I met him on set,” she said. “We had kind of a love at first sight thing. It was pretty awesome. It was really fun.”

How did Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Pitt meet?

Paltrow was in her early 20s when the romance began. Pitt was already a major film star and about nine years older, but she said the age difference did not concern her.

“No, because he was so beautiful,” she said when asked about it. “I think he was 31 and I was 22.” Apparently, symmetry has its limits as a relationship criterion.

Their romance quickly became Paltrow’s first major public relationship. At the same time, her own acting career was gaining momentum, leaving her with two kinds of fame arriving at once. She had films coming out and was becoming known for her work, but the press also defined her as Pitt’s girlfriend.

“I had movies coming out, so I was sort of getting famous on my own, and I was famous as his girlfriend,” she said. Paltrow described the level of attention as “overwhelming” and a “big thing.”

The couple became engaged in 1996 but never married. Looking back, Paltrow said their demanding schedules and the intensity of the relationship helped explain why it ended before the wedding.

Why did their engagement end?

“We were working all over the different parts of the world,” Paltrow said. “I think there was an aspect of it that was very heady. I was very young, and he was this beautiful movie star.”

Nearly three decades later, she still speaks warmly about Pitt, now 62. Paltrow has called him “a great guy” and said they remain friends. She also accepts that the relationship will probably keep appearing in interviews, because dating one of the world’s most famous actors tends to create a durable question on the celebrity press checklist.

“He’s a very intriguing character,” she told Vanity Fair in 2025. “Like having dated, I don’t know, Prince William or something. That’s always going to come up.”

Paltrow, 53, later married Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. They share two children, Apple Martin, 22, and Moses Martin, 20. After that marriage ended, she married television writer and producer Brad Falchuk in 2018.

Falchuk is not troubled by the continued interest in her former fiancé, according to Paltrow. She described her husband as “the total love of my life,” as well as her best friend, brilliant, gorgeous and extremely attractive. Pitt may remain part of the archive, but Paltrow has made the current ranking quite clear.
