GTA 6 Gameplay Makes Crime a Calculated Risk

The latest GTA 6 gameplay details suggest that Rockstar Games wants players to consider the consequences before stealing the nearest convenient vehicle. Car theft, police attention and major story decisions will require more thought than they did in Grand Theft Auto 5, according to developers who discussed the game during a recent preview.

An extended look at Grand Theft Auto 6 appeared on Netflix and YouTube, while creators who saw the material early shared additional details. YouTuber and Twitch streamer TGG spoke with Rockstar North developer Rob Nelson, who said the new design asks players to make decisions more frequently.

Nelson compared that added consideration to the approach used in Red Dead Redemption 2. Players may begin encounters cautiously, he explained, but circumstances can quickly become more complicated. Apparently, taking any unattended object without a plan will no longer qualify as sound criminal strategy.

Why stealing a car carries more risk

“You have to make a lot more decisions, yes. All the time, and I think it adds so much to the game,” Nelson told TGG.

He used vehicle theft to explain how ordinary actions can create larger problems. Pulling someone from a car could prompt the victim to contact police, leaving the player to deal with the resulting pursuit or confrontation.

“It brings a bit of risk now to jack someone out of the car, they’re going to call the cops, I’m going to have a bunch of trouble, then I might have to deal with them,” Nelson said.

That risk may encourage a quieter approach. Instead of taking an occupied vehicle in public, players could search for a parked car in an isolated area, break into it and leave without attracting attention.

“I think you feel a lot more like a criminal, and you have to think like one a lot more with the way this has been designed,” he added.

Vehicle security will also vary. Some expensive cars reportedly require specific tools to unlock, and the process may involve a minigame. In other words, luxury vehicles will not politely surrender because the player pressed one button near the door.

How choices affect the story and relationships

The expanded preview also revealed more activities, gameplay systems and story details. Rockstar’s broader aim appears to be giving players decisions that influence how they proceed through the campaign, rather than letting every problem dissolve into gunfire and a rapidly increasing wanted level.

That choice-driven approach extends to protagonists Jason and Lucia. The pair can become romantically involved, but romance is not mandatory. If players prefer, their relationship can remain a close friendship. Either way, they will continue supporting each other throughout the story.

Rockstar has also acknowledged the enormous expectations surrounding the game. The company is reportedly nervous about meeting them and is pursuing a level of polish it considers close to “perfect.” That is a modest target for one of the most anticipated games ever made.

The new details indicate that Grand Theft Auto 6 will retain the series’ familiar freedom while attaching more consequences to impulsive behavior. Players can still steal cars and create trouble. They may simply need the correct tools, a better plan and, on rare occasions, a moment of restraint.
