“The AI did not ‘cure cancer’ by itself,” Stebbing wrote. It is a necessary clarification, though perhaps less convenient for an AI-generated anime launch video.
Gamgee promotes an approximately 75 percent tumor reduction in its “first documented case.” That figure comes with substantial limits: there was no control group, several treatments were involved, and no independently published clinical results establish that other dogs would respond similarly.
Mast-cell tumors are not rare in veterinary oncology. A veterinary oncology and pathology consensus paper estimates that they account for roughly 20 percent of canine skin tumors. Their frequency creates a potentially large patient population, but prevalence is not proof that one treatment works.
How does Gamgee plan to make each vaccine?
Gamgee says its first product is called ze-ets-001. The proposed workflow starts with matched tumor and healthy tissue samples from a dog. DNA and RNA are then sequenced, mutations are ranked, an individualized mRNA vaccine is manufactured, and a veterinary oncologist administers it.
The company says the process should require less than 20 minutes of a veterinarian’s time and fit into existing clinical workflows. Conyngham is targeting vaccine design within 48 hours and an end-to-end price of $2,000.
That would be a sharp improvement over Rosie’s original process, which he says took about one year and cost roughly $20,000. Earlier company materials suggested a finished vaccine could be available in around four weeks, while warning that the estimate came from a single case and could vary.
Gamgee says it is recruiting for trials in Australia and accepting applications globally. Y Combinator corroborates those plans. However, no independently published trial protocol, enrollment total or results have surfaced. The company has also not publicly detailed its eligibility requirements, regulatory route or independently verified safety data.
Those omissions matter for a treatment marketed across borders. Personalized cancer vaccines involve sequencing, manufacturing and clinical administration, all of which tend to produce more paperwork than a startup landing page suggests.
Who is backing the company?
Gamgee joined Y Combinator’s Summer 2026 batch. Its accelerator profile lists a two-person team based in San Francisco, despite the company’s Australian trial activity and research connections.

Gamgee also says it collaborates with the University of Queensland and institutes at the University of New South Wales. Conyngham has invited additional funders and research partners to contact the business.
OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman amplified the original story, calling it “an amazing story” and saying chatbots enabled Conyngham “to act with the power of a research institute.” The description captures AI’s usefulness in finding and organizing technical information. It gives less attention to the trained scientists who checked the targets, built the construct and manufactured the vaccine, which are fairly important parts of making a vaccine.
On April 13, Conyngham said a second vaccine design would target Rosie’s remaining treatment-resistant tumor burden. No independently verified outcome from that second design has been published.
Is the real prize treatment data rather than one vaccine?
Gamgee’s longer-term strategy is broader than selling custom injections. The company says it wants to build a proprietary database combining canine genomic information with treatment outcomes. As more dogs pass through the system, that dataset could help refine target selection and give Gamgee what it describes as a compounding competitive advantage.
That may be the more consequential part of the business model. Veterinary cancer care generates genomic and clinical information, but Gamgee’s ability to turn it into a useful dataset will depend on patient numbers, consistent follow-up and reliable outcomes. None of those can be assumed from one prominent dog.
The company claims around six million dogs receive cancer diagnoses each year in the United States, although its Y Combinator profile does not provide the underlying study. Even a fraction of that market could support a substantial service if the vaccines prove safe, practical and effective.
Gamgee ultimately wants to apply its AI and genetics platform to other diseases, species and human patients. That is a dramatic expansion from Rosie’s case, where the vaccine’s individual contribution remains unknown.
The startup has assembled credible institutional support, an emotionally powerful origin story and a lower-cost production target. What it does not yet have in public is controlled evidence showing that its central product works. For owners facing a pet’s cancer diagnosis, that distinction is not academic. It is the difference between a promising experiment and a proven treatment.
