A Galanz refrigerator recall now covers 121,680 retro-style units after 34 reported fires and one death, according to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission. The danger comes from internal electrical parts that can short-circuit and ignite, turning an appliance meant to keep food cold into a serious fire hazard.
The federal agency announced the recall on July 30. As of August 3, 2026, it had not expanded the affected models, revised the incident count or changed its instructions to consumers.
Which Galanz refrigerators are affected?
The recall applies to 7.6-cubic-foot retro refrigerators manufactured by Zhongshan Galanz and imported by Galanz Americas and Home Depot. They were sold at Home Depot stores nationwide and through Amazon from January 2019 through September 2022 for between $330 and $520.
Affected units came in black, blue, red and white. They measure approximately 58 inches tall, 24 inches wide and 21 inches deep.
Consumers should check the label on the back for one of these model numbers:

- GLR76TWEER
The model number alone is not enough. The recall only covers refrigerators with date codes from December 2018 through December 2020, shown in YYYYMM format. That detail matters for owners and secondhand sellers alike, because an otherwise matching refrigerator may fall outside the recall.
Federal law prohibits the sale or resale of recalled products.
What should owners do now?
The Consumer Product Safety Commission says anyone with an affected refrigerator should unplug it immediately and contact Galanz Americas to arrange a free in-home repair by a qualified technician. Owners should not continue using the appliance while waiting for service.
“The recalled refrigerators’ internal electrical components can short circuit and ignite, posing a risk of serious injury or death from fire and burn hazards,” the agency said.
The commission has received 34 reports of the refrigerators catching fire. One person died in a fire attributed to one of the appliances in a local fire department report. Officials have not publicly identified the victim or disclosed when or where the fatal fire happened.
A Home Depot customer review posted on January 13, 2026, also alleged that a Galanz retro refrigerator shorted out and caused a house fire that destroyed a basement. However, the retailer’s product page appears to combine reviews for several refrigerator sizes, so the account cannot be conclusively connected to one of the recalled 7.6-cubic-foot units. Galanz apologized in its posted response but did not specifically address the alleged fire.
The affected model has prior federal history
One of the recalled model lines had already drawn attention from another federal regulator before the fire warning.
In December 2024, the United States Department of Energy fined Galanz $25.3 million after determining that basic model BCD-215V-62H, later redesignated as GLR76TRDER, failed federal energy-efficiency standards.
The energy case and the current fire recall concern different regulatory problems, but together they give consumers another reason to inspect the rear label carefully rather than relying on the refrigerator’s retro appearance or a marketplace listing. Design nostalgia, unfortunately, is not a safety certification.
A separate recall covers movie popcorn buckets
The refrigerator action comes alongside an unrelated recall involving more than 55,000 collectible popcorn buckets tied to Captain America: Brave New World and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Those products contain button-cell batteries that children can access easily. If swallowed, the batteries can cause internal chemical burns, serious injury or death. Consumers with those buckets should follow the applicable recall instructions and keep them away from children.
