Ethan Browne’s cause of death has been confirmed as an accidental overdose involving fentanyl, methamphetamine and lidocaine, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. A newly reported account of the scene also provides a clearer, and deeply grim, timeline of the 52-year-old actor and model’s final hours.
The findings have not prompted any announced police action or revision to the accidental-death ruling. As of July 23, 2026, Jackson Browne’s family had issued no further public statement beyond asking for privacy after Ethan’s death.
What happened before Ethan Browne was found
Ethan was discovered unresponsive in the bedroom of his Los Angeles home by his roommate at about 8:24 a.m. on November 25, 2025, according to a medical examiner’s report obtained by Us Weekly. Emergency personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
His roommate told investigators that Ethan had appeared “off” and was “possibly under the influence of drugs” at around 8 p.m. the previous evening. He was last known to be alive at approximately 10:30 p.m., when he went to bed.
The report described narcotics, prescription medications and drug paraphernalia throughout the room. Ethan was reportedly found holding a straw and lighter. Investigators also documented a glass pipe containing a crystalline substance and brown residue, burned aluminum foil, vaping devices and nitrous oxide cartridges commonly known as “whip-its.” A box on the bed was said to contain suspected illicit substances and additional paraphernalia.
Those specific bedroom details have been reported from the examiner’s document but have not been independently confirmed by other outlets. The central medical finding, however, has been corroborated by Us Weekly and the Los Angeles Times.
How the medical examiner ruled on his death
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined that Ethan died from the combined effects of fentanyl, methamphetamine and lidocaine. His death was ruled accidental.
Fentanyl and methamphetamine have become particularly lethal parts of the wider U.S. overdose crisis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, they ranked first and second among drugs involved in American overdose deaths in 2023. Methamphetamine was implicated in 33,411 deaths that year.
The broader national picture was improving by the time Ethan died, although “improving” remains a grimly relative term when tens of thousands of people are still dying. Preliminary CDC estimates recorded 69,973 overdose deaths in 2025, nearly 14% fewer than the estimated 81,313 deaths in 2024. Estimated deaths involving opioids fell from 55,296 to 44,564 over the same period.
Most fatal overdoses are not intentional. The CDC found that 91.6% of U.S. overdose deaths in 2024 were unintentional, consistent with the examiner’s ruling in Ethan’s case.
What Jackson Browne said about his son
Jackson Browne announced Ethan’s death on Facebook on November 26, 2025, according to the Los Angeles Times, NME and Us Weekly. That was the day after Ethan was found, despite an earlier report describing the announcement as having been posted the same day.
“It is with deep sorrow that we share that on the morning of November 25, 2025, Ethan Browne, the son of Jackson Browne and Phyllis Major, was found unresponsive in his home and has passed away,” the family’s statement said.
“We ask for privacy and respect for the family during this difficult time. No further details are available at this moment.”
Jackson and model Phyllis Major welcomed Ethan in 1973 and married in 1975. Major died by suicide in 1976 at age 30. Jackson later said that raising Ethan became his “main focus” after her death.
Ethan eventually became a father himself. In a 2022 interview with Tru Rock Revival, Jackson called him “a great father” and said watching Ethan with his daughter made him feel “very proud.” That part of Ethan’s life received less attention than his famous parentage or screen credits, but it was clearly central to how his father spoke about him.
Ethan Browne’s acting and modeling career
Ethan built a career as both a model and actor. His best-known film appearance came in the 1995 cyber-thriller Hackers, where he appeared alongside Angelina Jolie. The film was initially a commercial disappointment but later developed a substantial cult following, particularly among audiences drawn to its highly stylized vision of early internet culture. Accuracy was not always invited into the server room.
He also appeared in the 2004 comedy-drama Raising Helen, starring Kate Hudson. His work gave him a public identity beyond being the son of one of the defining singer-songwriters of the 1970s.
No later family statement, law-enforcement development or change to the examiner’s findings has emerged. The official record remains straightforward: Ethan Browne died accidentally on November 25, 2025, amid an overdose crisis that was declining nationally but still claiming lives on a vast scale.
