His post offered no scientific plan, investment commitment or indication that one of his companies is developing anything resembling a dinosaur-revival programme. The suggestion he responded to was itself framed around whether such a startup could attract funding.
That did little to stop people imagining what might happen next.
One account, @AutismCapital, offered perhaps the most predictable response possible:
“What could go wrong?”
The Jurassic franchise has spent decades providing unusually elaborate answers to precisely that question.
Another user, @TheAuraLens, argued that technology might not even be the most worrying part of the equation.
“Everyone wants Jurassic Park. Until the fences go down. The problem was never the technology. It was the humans running the park.”
That gets rather closer to the point of Steven Spielberg's original film. The dinosaurs are dangerous, certainly, but the catastrophe depends on human decisions: corporate ambition, inadequate safeguards and sabotage turn an extraordinary scientific achievement into an extremely expensive buffet.
The idea of engineering 'dinosaurs' has been around Musk before
Musk's latest reaction also has some history behind it.
In 2021, Max Hodak, who co-founded Neuralink with Musk, argued that something resembling Jurassic Park could theoretically be created through breeding and genetic engineering.
Hodak was careful about what that would mean. He was not claiming scientists could recover authentic dinosaurs from prehistoric DNA and simply start hatching velociraptors.
“We could probably build jurassic park if we wanted to. wouldn’t be genetically authentic dinosaurs but 🤷♂️. maybe 15 years of breeding + engineering to get super exotic novel species,” he wrote at the time.
That qualification is doing a great deal of work.
The proposal was essentially about engineering new animals with unusual traits rather than resurrecting genuine dinosaur species. A genetically designed creature that looks suitably prehistoric may satisfy a theme park's marketing department, but scientifically it would be something very different from bringing an extinct dinosaur back to life.
Fans are treating the movies as a warning label
For many people responding to Musk, the larger objection was less about whether such animals could eventually be engineered and more about why anyone would want to put them in a park.
User @zacodil pointed directly to the franchise's central message:
“Those 6 movies were full of warnings! ‘Life finds a way’ was supposed to be a threat, not a pitch deck tagline.”
It is difficult to argue that the Jurassic films have been ambiguous on this subject.
Again and again, humans create or manipulate animals they do not fully understand, place them inside systems they believe they control and discover that nature is less impressed with risk-management presentations than executives tend to be.
Jeff Goldblum's Dr Ian Malcolm distilled the idea into the franchise's most famous warning: “Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.”
The problem is not merely that some dinosaurs were enormous carnivores. Even a perfectly designed containment system still has employees, software, maintenance schedules and the occasional person having a particularly bad day.
As Dennis Nedry demonstrated in the original film, the strongest fence in the world becomes considerably less reassuring when somebody deliberately switches it off.
De-extinction research makes the fantasy slightly less fantastical
There is a reason the conversation no longer sounds quite as absurd as it once did. Genetic engineering has advanced dramatically since Michael Crichton's story first turned dinosaur cloning into a mainstream idea.
In 2025, biotechnology company Colossal Biosciences announced the birth of three genetically engineered wolves that it described as the first successfully de-extincted dire wolves. The animals were created by editing gray-wolf genes using information obtained from ancient dire-wolf DNA.
Scientists outside the company have been more cautious about that description. That debate is useful in understanding what a future “Jurassic Park” might actually involve.
Hodak's earlier proposal similarly acknowledged that engineered creatures would not be genetically authentic dinosaurs. Producing an animal designed to express certain prehistoric-looking characteristics is one challenge; reconstructing an extinct species separated from living animals by tens of millions of years is another.
So far, nothing in Musk's post suggests that particular problem has been solved. Nor does enthusiasm on X constitute a research programme.
A dinosaur startup would still have to survive the human factor
Some responses were less concerned with scientific terminology and more interested in where Musk's apparent enthusiasm could eventually lead.
User @antibearthesis joked: “Elon will build a Jurassic Park on mars you can't even make it up🤣🤣🤣🤣🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸”
@DogecoinNorway proposed going one step further: “That and bring back flying dragons😂”
For now, dragons remain safely outside the biotechnology industry's announced pipeline, and Musk has not said he intends to build either them or dinosaurs.
What his comment does show is how quickly the boundary between science-fiction discussion and genuine technological debate has shifted. Geneticists are already experimenting with techniques intended to reproduce characteristics of extinct animals, while entrepreneurs are openly discussing whether engineered new species could become viable projects.
That still leaves the question Jurassic Park has been asking from the beginning. Developing the technology would only be the first problem. Someone would then have to decide what to create, where to keep it, how to control it and why the risk was worth taking.
If anybody eventually does raise money for the world's first dinosaur park, finding investors may turn out to be the easy part. The films have already spent more than three decades explaining what comes after that.
