Variety reports that Ed Harris criticized “Dutton Ranch” at the Monday night premiere of Apple TV’s The Dink, saying he became so frustrated with how his role was handled that he wanted out midway through filming. Subtle workplace feedback, it was not.

Why Ed Harris was upset about his “Dutton Ranch” role

Harris plays veterinarian Everett McKinney in the Taylor Sheridan series, a spinoff connected to the wider Yellowstone universe.

Speaking to Variety, Harris said he believed the character had been set up as one of four main roles in Season 1 before he joined the project. According to him, that is not how the season played out.

He told the outlet he felt “underused and inconsequential” and said he raised that concern with producers. His account of their response was not exactly warm and ceremonial: he said they shrugged.

The bar scene that pushed things over the edge

Harris pointed to one particular scene involving Everett, Beth Dutton, played by Kelly Reilly, and Rip Wheeler, played by Cole Hauser.

In the scene, Everett is talking with Beth at a bar when Rip walks in and tells him it is his turn to sing. Harris said Everett then went up to the microphone, but the director cut both the scene and the song entirely.

Harris told Variety the decision infuriated him, saying, “I’m going, ‘f*** you, people.’”

According to Harris, production told him the moment was too “up” for an episode that ended on a darker note. He said that explanation was “enough reason to say I’m voiding my contract.”

What Harris says about Season 2

Harris also told Variety he has heard his character may get more attention in Season 2. Still, he didn’t treat that as a real fix.

He described himself as “just a little frustrated” by the situation, which, given the rest of his comments, may be doing a lot of diplomatic work.

For now, here’s what’s on the record: Harris says he expected a more central role, objected to a cut scene that mattered to him, and felt his character did not get the weight he was promised. The producers have not given their side in the reporting cited here.
