David Harbour’s latest comments on his mental health breakdown connect a private crisis with public reports he says distorted his relationship with Millie Bobby Brown, his longtime “Stranger Things” co-star.
Harbour said he experienced a breakdown last year that was “confusing as hell” for him and difficult for people around him to understand as it was happening. He described depression, mania and other mental health episodes as conditions that can leave loved ones struggling to interpret behavior in real time, which is both true and, inconveniently for celebrity news cycles, not easily reduced to one neat headline.
What Harbour says triggered the episode
Harbour told Variety he was affected by reports claiming Brown had raised concerns about his conduct on the “Stranger Things” set, including allegations that she had filed a bullying and harassment complaint and that the pair had friction behind the scenes.
He characterized those reports as false. The actor did not deny that he and Brown had disagreements, but he framed them as part of a long working relationship rather than evidence of a broken one.
The reporting around the alleged complaint preceded a December incident at a California bar, where Harbour took a man’s hat during an unusual interaction. That moment drew attention because it came after the claims about tension with Brown had already circulated.
