Angelina Jolie says her “fighting spirit” has returned after a period when she felt knocked off balance, and the timing of her comments makes the Angelina Jolie divorce from Brad Pitt hard to ignore, even if she did not name him directly.
In a new interview with Variety, Jolie said that part of herself had been “lost for a bit,” adding, “I kind of got taken down a little.” That is not exactly a coded message requiring a legal analyst, given the years-long fallout from her split with Pitt.
What Jolie said about feeling like herself again
Jolie told Variety that she feels closer to the person she used to be, framing the change as a return of energy and resolve rather than a simple career refresh.
Her exact phrase, “fighting spirit,” is doing a lot of work here. She said it had disappeared for a while, and that she is now recovering it. She did not say Pitt’s name, did not directly reference their marriage, and did not turn the interview into a full post-divorce briefing. Subtlety has limits, though.
The backdrop is well known: Jolie and Pitt’s relationship ended in one of Hollywood’s most public and prolonged separations, with legal disputes, custody issues, and plenty of tabloid oxygen along the way. So when Jolie says she was “taken down a little,” the public context is already sitting right there.
Her children are central to the reset
Jolie credited her children with helping her regain that sense of self. She said they have been “encouraging” her as she reconnects with the parts of her identity that felt muted.
She also made one of the sharper comments in the interview when speaking about how well her children know her: they “know me more than anybody, and they still like me, which says a lot.”
That line lands with some force because the family split has not just been about two famous adults dividing property and schedules. Several of the children have reportedly become estranged from Pitt, and some have moved away from using his surname.
One recent example involves their daughter Zahara. TMZ reported it had obtained a petition filed earlier this month in which Zahara asked for her legal name to be changed to Zahara Marley Jolie. A small paperwork detail, yes, but in this family saga, even administrative filings arrive with emotional subtext attached.
Why acting became the more practical job
Jolie also explained why she returned more fully to acting after the breakup. During her marriage, she said her humanitarian work often kept her away from her children for long stretches. Acting, by contrast, gave her a more workable structure.
That much is clear: film roles can be scheduled, negotiated, and built around family logistics in a way that global humanitarian work often cannot. It is less romantic than the usual “return to the screen” narrative, but it is probably more accurate.
There was another practical factor too: the money. Jolie acknowledged that acting came with major paydays, which is not a shocking confession from someone working inside the film industry. Hollywood does occasionally pay its biggest stars. A rare development.
The takeaway is pretty direct:
- She was flattened for a while after the split.
- Her children helped push her back toward herself.
- Acting offered both financial upside and put her family within reach.
- She now sees that “fighting spirit” as returning.
Jolie may not have said Pitt’s name in the interview, but the history around them gives the comments their weight. The marriage is over, the public aftermath continues, and Jolie is now describing herself as back in motion.
