The latest Delaney Hall detainee death has intensified scrutiny of medical care and oversight at the privately operated immigration facility in Newark, New Jersey.

Edwin Lopez-Cornejo, a 41-year-old man from El Salvador, died at a Newark hospital on Saturday after suffering a medical emergency inside the detention centre. US Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed his death on Monday.

ICE said medical staff and employees of GEO Group, the private contractor running Delaney Hall, responded to the emergency and arranged his transfer to hospital. No official cause of death had been announced as of August 4.
