A 51-year-old concertgoer died after a fall from an upper level at Madison Square Garden during a Goose performance on Sunday night, turning the band’s sold-out New York stop into a tragedy the venue could not soften with a statement.

New York Police Department officers were called to the arena shortly before 10 p.m. after a 911 report of an injured man inside the venue. Police said the man was taken by emergency medical workers to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where he was pronounced dead.

What happened at Madison Square Garden

The man is believed to have fallen from the 300 level section of Madison Square Garden, according to Fox News Digital. That area includes balcony and upper-tier seating inside the arena.

Fox News Digital also reported that the victim was at the concert with his wife. Authorities have not publicly released his name.

The fall happened during the second night of Goose’s two sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden, a major milestone for the Connecticut-formed rock band. Instead, the night is now being remembered for a death that brought police and medics to the arena within minutes.

Police and medical response

The New York Police Department said officers responded shortly before 10 p.m. after receiving the emergency call about an injured male at the venue.

Emergency medical workers took the 51-year-old to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. He was later pronounced dead there, police said.

Officials have not released further details about the circumstances leading up to the fall. MSG Entertainment said it was waiting for the police report on the incident.

Goose and MSG Entertainment respond

Goose, made up of Rick Mitarotonda, Trevor Weekz, Peter Anspach and Cotter Ellis, issued a statement after the concertgoer’s death.

“We are deeply saddened and heartbroken to learn of the tragic event that occurred at tonight’s show,” the band said.

“We extend our deepest sympathy to everyone affected. Thank you to the emergency personnel and venue staff who stepped in with care and support.”

MSG Entertainment also released a statement, saying: “While we await the police report on the tragedy at last night’s Goose concert, we are deeply saddened by the loss of a fan’s life at Madison Square Garden.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the concertgoer.”

The band’s next scheduled show

Goose’s next concert is scheduled for Sunday night at SummerStage in Central Park.

According to the band’s tour listings, that event is also sold out. After a weekend of packed rooms and rising momentum, the next show now carries a much heavier shadow.
