A Carnival Cruise passenger overboard incident ended in a death near the Bahamas after a guest went into the water from the Carnival Liberty while the ship was sailing toward Nassau.
What happened near Nassau
Sources aboard the ship told the man went overboard Tuesday as the Carnival Liberty traveled just outside Nassau. A life ring was thrown toward him, but he was soon no longer visible, leading to an immediate search-and-rescue response.
Carnival Cruise Line later told that the guest climbed over his stateroom balcony and went overboard while the ship was sailing from Celebration Key to Nassau. Crew members launched a search and recovered him from the water, but he did not survive.
Carnival says it is supporting the family
The cruise line said the passenger had been traveling with family members and that it is now providing them support.
No further details about the passenger’s identity were released in the initial report. The company’s account indicates the response began quickly, though in overboard cases, distance, visibility, and time in the water can narrow the margin for survival with rather unforgiving efficiency.
