A helicopter landing at Cabela’s turned an ordinary Wisconsin shopping trip into a police matter on August 1, after several people reported an aircraft touching down in the retailer’s parking lot in Richfield. The pilot’s explanation was direct: driving from Rosendale would take too long.

Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived to investigate and spoke with the 69-year-old man. They found that he held the proper pilot’s license, had landed safely and had complied with applicable Federal Aviation Administration regulations.

No arrest or citation followed. Sometimes the unusual thing in the parking lot is also the legal thing in the parking lot.
