Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has ordered a review of the LAPD dog shooting that killed Jameson, a mixed golden retriever, Saint Bernard and poodle, after officers responded to a distress call at an apartment complex over the weekend, according to the New York Post.

What the mayor has ordered

Bass said in a press release that “every life lost to violence is a tragedy, and we know that the devastating loss of Jameson will be felt by his family forever.”

The mayor also said she personally spoke with Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell to make sure the department examines whether any wrongdoing occurred. Bass said she will monitor the investigation, which she called “transparent and thorough.”

The order does not settle fault. It means City Hall is publicly pressing the department to explain what happened, an important distinction in a case where emotion is running well ahead of the formal process.

The incident began after police were called Saturday to an apartment complex over a report of a woman screaming.

Officers encountered Marie Marseille, Jameson’s owner and a Knicks fan who had just been celebrating New York’s 94-90 NBA Finals win over the Spurs. According to police, officers told Marseille to secure the dog.

Police say Jameson then ran toward the officers. They opened fire, killing him.

What Jameson’s owner says now

Marseille told TMZ that the LAPD has not apologized to her for killing Jameson.

Marseille’s account increases pressure on the department as the review moves forward. For now, little is publicly known: a distress call, officers responding, an order to secure the dog, police gunfire, and a family left without its pet.

Bass’s intervention ensures the case will not be treated as a routine after-action matter, at least not publicly. Whether the investigation finds policy violations or clears the officers is the part that still has to be proved, rather than announced.
