An X user says Anthropic’s Claude helped him recover lost Bitcoin worth nearly $400,000 after more than a decade of being locked out of his wallet. The man, known online as Cprkrn, shared the story on May 13, saying the AI chatbot helped him regain access to 5 Bitcoin from his college days.
“Holy f**king sht omg Claude just cracked this sht,” he wrote in the viral post, thanking Anthropic and its chief executive, Dario Amodei.
At the time of the post, Bitcoin was trading at around $79,600, putting the recovered 5 BTC at roughly $398,000. Not a bad return on one very avoidable password decision.
How did Claude help recover the Bitcoin wallet?
According to Cprkrn’s thread, the wallet had been inaccessible since college. He said he bought the Bitcoin when it was worth about $250 per coin, then lost access after changing the wallet password while high.
The password he later revealed was: “lol420fuckthePOLICE!*:)”
He said he spent years trying to break back into the wallet, including running through what he described as trillions of possible password combinations. That did not work. The eventual breakthrough, he said, came when he uploaded files from his old college computer into Claude.
Rather than somehow smashing through Bitcoin security, Claude appeared to help with the less glamorous but more useful work: sorting through old files and identifying what mattered.
What files made the difference?
Cprkrn said Claude found an older wallet.dat file that appeared to come from before the password change. That distinction mattered because if the file predated the forgotten password, it could still be tied to older access details.
He also said he had recently found an old mnemonic phrase, which helped unlock the wallet once the correct file was located. In other words, the AI did not guess a magic password out of thin air. It helped connect scattered evidence from an old computer with valid wallet recovery information.
That is a little less cinematic than “AI cracks Bitcoin,” but also much closer to what appears to have happened.
Did Claude break Bitcoin security?
The story spread quickly through crypto and AI circles, partly because “AI recovers $400,000 in Bitcoin” is the kind of sentence designed to make people check their old hard drives immediately.
Several observers pointed out that Claude did not break Bitcoin’s cryptography. Based on Cprkrn’s account, the chatbot helped him:
- Review files from an old college computer
- Identify an earlier wallet file
- Understand which recovery path was likely to work
- Use existing wallet data and a mnemonic phrase to regain access
That is different from brute-forcing Bitcoin itself. It is closer to a highly patient assistant helping someone clean out a digital attic, except the attic contained almost $400,000.
Where does BTCRecover fit in?
The story also prompted discussion of BTCRecover, a known wallet recovery tool used in cases where people remember most of a wallet password or seed phrase but need help testing variations.
BTCRecover’s documentation says it supports Bitcoin Core wallet recovery, along with several other wallet types. Tools like that are built for situations where a user has partial or valid recovery information, not for defeating the underlying security of Bitcoin wallets.
That distinction matters, especially as crypto and AI stories tend to grow extra limbs once they start moving online.
Why the story hit a nerve
For anyone who has an old laptop, external hard drive, or forgotten folder sitting around, Cprkrn’s story lands somewhere between inspiring and irritating. Lost crypto is a real problem, and many wallets remain inaccessible because people misplaced passwords, recovery phrases, or device backups years ago.
Cprkrn also joked that he plans to name his child after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. Given the reported value of the recovery, that may be the rare tech tribute that arrives with a clear financial rationale.
The bigger lesson is simpler: old files are not always digital clutter. Sometimes they are the difference between a dead wallet and a very expensive second chance.
