The larger event is set to begin with mid-afternoon cocktails before a reception that continues into the evening.
Police, camera crews and one very watched loading bay
Outside the Garden, the build-up was treated like a major civic event, because in Manhattan, a celebrity wedding rumour can apparently require logistics on the level of a summit.
Police officers worked in extreme heat, with temperatures topping 100F (37C), while camera crews and reporters watched for any sign of what was happening inside. The arena, home to multiple New York sports teams, became the focus of several days of surveillance by entertainment media.
Celebrity outlet TMZ streamed live footage of what appeared to be one of Madison Square Garden’s loading bays. For hours, viewers could see mostly stationary forklifts, event workers, and, at one point around 18:00 ET, several men in cargo shorts moving cardboard boxes from a van.
Reporters also tracked police barricades being placed and people being moved away from areas near the arena to clear space for guest arrivals.
A sign near one entrance warned that anyone entering the venue from 29 June to 3 July was consenting to being filmed or photographed inside for an “event,” suggesting that filming may have been part of the preparations.
Which celebrities were spotted?
By Thursday evening, the guest list was revealing itself.
Antonoff, Swift’s longtime producer and collaborator, was photographed reportedly heading to the event in a tuxedo, with a toothpick in his mouth. His sister, designer Rachel Antonoff, followed in a bubblegum-pink dress.
Sports broadcaster Erin Andrews was seen wearing a silver sparkly gown. Swift’s longtime publicist, Tree Paine, wore a light blue dress.
Page Six reported that actor Bradley Cooper and model Gigi Hadid, a longtime member of Swift’s circle, had also arrived at the venue. Singer and actress Selena Gomez posted photos on Instagram showing herself in a black gown with gem earrings while heading to an unspecified event.

Swift reportedly left the Thursday night event at Madison Square Garden well after midnight and arrived home in the early hours of Friday morning.
A major charity donation came the same night
While Swift’s representatives did not comment on any wedding plans, they did confirm a major charitable donation.
On Thursday evening, Swift and Kelce donated $26m (£19.4m) to charities across the United States. The recipients included organizations in places closely linked to the couple: New York, Nashville, where Swift began her music career, and Kansas City, home of Kelce’s NFL team, the Kansas City Chiefs.
Swift’s representatives told BBC News that the donation, which included support for food banks, was for “charities across the United States.”
The timing was notable. As attention focused on dresses, guest arrivals and blocked-off streets, the couple also sent a substantial amount of money toward community organizations. Celebrity spectacle and practical philanthropy sharing the same news cycle is not subtle, but it is effective.
Why Madison Square Garden became the center of speculation
The rumours had been building for days. Media outlets tracked trucks marked with labels such as “GP” and “garden party,” while crews unloaded large amounts of equipment, including a large white staircase prop and a large mirror ball.
Earlier in the week, workers were seen rolling out a red carpet, which was quickly pulled back.
City officials confirmed that someone had applied for street closure permits in the area, though they did not say who. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, showing a working knowledge of both politics and pop culture, repeatedly hinted at the wedding chatter during press conferences.
The timing intensified the attention. The events are taking place during the 4 July weekend, marking America’s 250th birthday, while New York City is also hosting the World Cup. Closing down part of Manhattan’s busiest corridor during that stretch is not something the city generally does for casual ambience.
Fans gathered despite the heat
Fans still came to the Garden, even after Mamdani repeatedly urged people to stay indoors because of the extreme heat.
“I’m here to see the alleged wedding,” said Swift fan Ryan Weng, “because I’ve been loving her for more than 15 years, so it’s going to be a very, very amazing and irreplaceable experience for me and my entire life.”
Rusty Carbaug, a pilot in her 30s, stopped by to wish Swift well and wore a Kansas-themed T-shirt in honour of Kelce.
“I feel like I grew in my music taste with her,” Carbaug said, adding: “The right man for her is whoever she chooses.”
For many fans, the emotional logic was simple. Swift’s career has unfolded in public for nearly two decades, with her audience following not only the albums, but the milestones around them. A possible wedding, even one seen only through barricades and tent fabric, becomes part of that shared story.
Not everyone expected this venue
Madison Square Garden is iconic, but nobody would mistake it for a delicate wedding venue. It is a large, dark, hard-edged arena sitting above one of the most crowded transit hubs in the United States.
For some New Yorkers, it was difficult to imagine Swift, an artist known for careful visual presentation, choosing a six-decade-old sports arena where no floral design can fully erase the fact that generations of beer and sweat have passed through the building.
Elizabeth Maxey, 21, and Hayden Mason, 19, University of Mississippi students, said they initially doubted Swift would pick the Garden.
But the street closures changed their view.
“OK, this is gonna be something real. It’s gonna be happening,” Mason said.
Maxey added that, with Swift’s resources, “You’re gonna be able to make anything look pretty.”
Laura Bonne, a 20-year-old tourist from Belgium who was waiting outside the arena, said she liked the choice because it offered privacy.
“I think its nice because she’ll have a lot of privacy,” Bonne said.
That may be the practical reason for the unexpected venue. Madison Square Garden is not soft or romantic by default, but it is secure, controlled and built for moving famous people through hidden entrances. For one of the most watched couples in the world, that may count as its own kind of luxury.
