Rihanna did not just arrive at the 2026 Met Gala in a jewel-covered gown. She arrived with hair engineered to hold its own against it.
For the May 4 fundraiser at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, the singer and entrepreneur leaned into the night’s dress code, “Fashion Is Art,” with a Margiela by Glenn Martens couture gown featuring a corset covered in more than 115,000 crystal beads. The hair, created by her longtime stylist Yusef Williams, had to meet that level of construction without turning the whole thing into a competition for attention.
“We leaned into the idea of a living sculpture,” Williams told British Vogue shortly after Rihanna’s arrival. “The hair had to complete the look, not compete with it.”
A crown built from gold wire
Williams worked with luxury accessories designer Jennifer Behr to create the headpiece effect: 40 handcrafted wire curls, painted gold, placed into Rihanna’s hair.
The result was part finger wave, part crown, with the metalwork giving the impression of gold hair. Subtle, no. Precise, yes.
“We kept it sleek and intentional, then reimagined vintage gold wire pin curls in a modern way, so it felt like a nod to history without looking costume,” Williams said. “The hair was slicked tight to the head, with metal finger waves placed on top like a crown.”
That restraint mattered because the gown already carried a heavy visual load. The metal curls echoed the industrial edge of the Margiela look while keeping the overall silhouette controlled.
As Williams put it, “It was all about matching the sculptural feel of the outfit and staying aligned with the team’s vision; strong, timeless, and intentional from every angle.”
The wig did the structural work
Because the hairstyle was such a visible part of the red carpet look, Williams used True Indian Hair Company’s True HD Lace RTW Collection Ava wig.
An HD lace front is designed to blend closely with the scalp, which is especially useful under bright cameras and high-definition close-ups. In this case, it also had to support the added metal details.
“Using an HD lace front gave us a seamless blend and install, while offering versatility and natural movement, while still allowing for structure,” Williams told Vogue, “which was needed given added gold wire pin curls.”
A coordinated Met Gala arrival
Rihanna, 38, attended the gala with partner A$AP Rocky. The rapper wore a custom Chanel by Matthieu Blazy look built around a bubblegum pink wool robe with black satin lapels, paired with black trousers and dress shoes. He also carried a small apple-shaped bag.
The couple share three children: RZA, 3, Riot, 2, and Rocki, 7 months.
For a carpet built around the idea of fashion as art, Rihanna’s team treated hair as architecture rather than an accessory. The gown brought the crystals. The hair brought the metalwork. Together, they made the case that a Met Gala look can be crafted from the scalp down.
