Margot Robbie’s 2026 Met Gala look played a neat trick: it looked almost restrained until the numbers arrived.
The Wuthering Heights star stepped onto the Metropolitan Museum of Art stairs on May 4 in a strapless metallic gold Chanel gown. According to Vogue, the seemingly simple dress took 761 hours to create and featured 1,100 embroidered embellishments.
The detail was in the train
The Chanel design kept the front clean, with a bare décolletage and timeless chandelier diamond earrings. The real construction flex sat behind her: rows of lamé feathers covered the back of Robbie’s dramatic train.
It was a quiet kind of couture math. From a distance, minimalist. Up close, a very expensive calendar problem.
Robbie’s presence at the Met Gala is not automatic. Before 2026, her most recent appearance was in 2023. Still, Chanel was hardly a surprise choice. Robbie is a brand ambassador for the French fashion house, and the partnership has become one of the more dependable red carpet pairings in Hollywood.
At the 2023 Met Gala, themed “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line Of Beauty,” Robbie wore a 1993 Chanel gown first worn by Cindy Crawford. She told Vogue at the time that being dressed by Chanel was an “honor,” adding: “It’s incredible. Obviously, the Met’s always an exciting night, but I had the great privilege of getting to know Karl to a certain extent.”
A calmer turn after a maximalist press run
This year’s “Costume Art” evening, shaped around Anna Wintour’s “Fashion Is Art” dress code, put Robbie in a more pared-back lane than her earlier 2026 style run.
To promote Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights, which co-stars fellow Australian Jacob Elordi, Robbie had leaned into major statement dressing. The clearest example came at the film’s Jan. 28 premiere, where she wore Elizabeth Taylor’s 17th-century Taj Mahal diamond.
Robbie told E! News of the piece: “It has a pretty incredible history, so we thought it would be nice,” noting, “Cartier put it on a chain.”
That history is tied to Taylor’s famously turbulent romance with Richard Burton, her on-again, off-again husband of 11 years.
So yes, Robbie knows how to carry a legendary jewel when the moment calls for it. At the 2026 Met Gala, she and Chanel went the other way: clean lines, gold metal shine, and hundreds of hours of handwork hiding in plain sight.
