The Presley Gerber death remains under investigation after the Los Angeles Medical Examiner confirmed that the 27-year-old model died at a rehabilitation facility on Sept. 20. Officials have not yet determined his cause of death, so the new record establishes where he died, not what happened.
Gerber was the son of supermodel Cindy Crawford and businessman Rande Gerber. A representative for the family, which also includes his sister, model and actor Kaia Gerber, confirmed his death to TMZ and said they were “asking for privacy during this very difficult and painful time.”
Before his death, Gerber had spoken publicly about seeking treatment for personal struggles. His posts offered an unusually candid account of addiction care, psychiatric medication and the pressure of dealing with private difficulties while belonging to one of Hollywood’s most recognizable families.
What treatment had Presley Gerber discussed?
In an Instagram video posted March 26, Gerber said he planned to undergo an “ibogaine flood dose.” He wrote in the caption that he was “praying it’s the last time I have to come back.”
Ibogaine is a naturally occurring psychedelic found in the roots of iboga, an African shrub used for centuries in healing ceremonies. Stanford Medicine has reported that the substance has more recently attracted interest for its potential use in treating drug addiction. Interest, of course, is not the same thing as settled medical approval, a distinction that psychedelic treatment discussions do not always place in large type.
His family publicly supported the decision to seek help. Crawford called her son a “warrior” and wrote that she was proud of him for having “walked thru the fire to find yourself.”
Rande Gerber praised his son’s courage, writing: “Facing what’s hard takes real strength and watching you find your way back to yourself is everything. I love you so much.” Kaia added that she was “so damn proud” of her brother.
What did he say about his mental health?
Gerber had offered a more detailed account of his difficulties in a December 2025 Instagram video. He said he had experienced “a lot of loss in many different forms” and described that loss as part of the reason he had reached a difficult point in his life.
He also raised concerns about the guidance he had received while taking psychiatric medications. According to Gerber, he had seen roughly 15 psychiatrists and often felt he had been given too much freedom to manage complicated prescriptions by himself.
“Every psychiatrist I’ve had, and I’ve had, like, 15, they’re all like, ‘Here’s 20 medications,’” he said. “‘Take this if you feel like this, take this as needed.’ And I’m like, ‘No, don’t give me that much leeway. I need some direction.’”
The model also said he was reconsidering who he spent time with. Having grown up in Hollywood, he explained that there were people he loved but was deliberately avoiding while trying to improve his health. Celebrity proximity may open doors, but it apparently does not make recovery any less complicated.
How did Kaia Gerber describe her brother’s openness?
In an interview with Vogue published Aug. 11, Kaia Gerber credited her brother with teaching their “very, very private” parents how to speak more openly about hardship.
“My brother, who says, ‘I’m gonna be very human for everyone,’” she said. “There’s only so much you can hide from the world. And trying to put a lid on something just makes the person feel like you’re ashamed of them.”
Her comments came weeks before his death and reflected a recurring theme in his recent public posts: Gerber wanted to discuss his struggles directly rather than maintain a polished public image.
The medical examiner has not announced when a cause of death might be determined. Until that investigation is complete, the confirmed facts remain limited: Gerber died Sept. 20 at age 27, and the location recorded by officials was a rehabilitation facility.
