NASA’s Prada spacesuit is getting the part astronauts will actually live in first: the base layer. Axiom Space has revealed the Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment, or LCVG, designed to be worn beneath the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit when Artemis IV brings humans back to the Moon in 2028.
It is not the glamorous outer shell people usually picture when they hear “spacesuit.” It is closer to high-tech thermal underwear, which is less cinematic but far more important when a person is sealed inside a suit on the lunar surface.
What the hidden Moon layer does
The LCVG is built to keep astronauts cool and comfortable during spacewalks. Inside the garment, cold water circulates through embedded tubes, drawing heat away from the body while the astronaut works inside the AxEMU suit.
That may sound like a small comfort feature until you remember the workplace: no breeze, no easy break, and a suit that has to function as a personal spacecraft. Subtle, breathable leisurewear this is not.
Axiom Space says the new garment also includes a backup system if the primary cooling setup fails. That is a notable change from older cooling suits, which did not have the same redundancy. In space hardware, “backup” is often just another word for everyone sleeping better.
How the garment helps astronauts breathe
Cooling is only part of the job. The LCVG also contains the ventilation system that supports the helmet environment inside the AxEMU.
That system sends fresh oxygen into the helmet and routes exhaled carbon dioxide toward a scrubber, where it can be removed and the air recirculated. In practical terms, the garment is helping manage both body temperature and breathable air while the astronaut is outside the spacecraft.
The layer may sit out of sight, but it is central to making the full suit work. A Moonwalk is not just a photo-op. It is hours of movement, heat, exertion, and life-support management wrapped around one person.
Why Prada is part of the project
Axiom Space and Prada had already shown their collaboration on the AxEMU outer suit. This new reveal gives a clearer look at how that partnership extends beneath the surface, where materials, fit, and manufacturing matter more than branding.
NASA’s involvement with fashion-adjacent space design is not entirely new. The agency previously funded the BioSuit concept from Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Dava Newman, developed with help from architect Guillermo Trotti. That project also explored the overlap between advanced materials, human movement, and suit design.
The Prada name naturally grabs attention because it is Prada, and subtlety was never going to win that headline battle. But the useful part here is not luxury styling. It is whether the garment can help astronauts stay cool, breathe safely, and work longer on the lunar surface.
For Artemis IV, that hidden layer may matter as much as the suit people will actually see.
