His latest comment moves the answer closer to yes, although HBO has not issued an unequivocal announcement. The network has confirmed that the series will return in 2027, but it has not provided a release month or day.
The apparent plan also represents a shift from what Mazin said in May 2025. At the time, he argued that the remaining narrative could not fit comfortably into one more season.
“There’s no way to complete this narrative in a third season,” Mazin said. “Hopefully, we’ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth. That’s the most likely outcome.”
Apparently, the likely outcome has since become less likely. HBO has not explained whether the story was restructured, shortened or simply reassessed.
Why did the plan appear to change?
HBO ordered the third season before the second had even premiered, showing considerable confidence in one of its biggest video game adaptations. The first season earned widespread critical praise and a nine-out-of-10 review from IGN critic Simon Cardy.
Season 2 received a more divided response. Some viewers objected to Bella Ramsey’s portrayal of the older Ellie, while the season’s decision to adapt only part of the game’s sprawling second story left the television narrative intentionally incomplete. Cardy gave it seven out of 10, describing it as “still good” but also as a sequel that struggled because it covered “only half of the story.”
That unfinished structure always made at least one more season necessary. The question was whether the remaining material would require two. Mazin once believed it would, but Bloys now thinks the showrunner has settled on a single final run.
No episode count or plot details have been announced. The third season is expected to continue adapting The Last of Us Part II, with the story likely shifting attention toward events and perspectives not fully explored in Season 2.
Is Naughty Dog finished with The Last of Us?
The HBO series may be approaching its endpoint, but Naughty Dog says the wider franchise is not. The studio has reduced its involvement in the television adaptation for the third season, yet it remains responsible for the intellectual property and has other work underway.
Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann said earlier in September that the end of this adaptation would not mean the end of the franchise.
“It’s important for us to note that as the creator of the games, Naughty Dog is still the steward of this IP and even though this might be the end of this adaptation, we’re not done with The Last of Us,” Druckmann said. “There’s a couple projects in the works that, when the time is right, I’m very excited to talk about.”
He did not identify those projects, leaving fans with the familiar entertainment-industry package of confirmation and almost no usable detail.
For now, Naughty Dog’s main public focus is Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. The studio completed performance-capture filming for the game in August, although its absence from the September 2026 State of Play presentation disappointed fans hoping for another look.
HBO’s adaptation, meanwhile, has a 2027 return window and what increasingly resembles a final assignment: complete the remaining story without the fourth season Mazin once considered unavoidable.
