Lady Gaga welcomed her daughter via surrogate with fiancé Michael Polansky, according to a report published on September 17. Their baby, whose full legal name is Rose Bean Polansky, was born in Los Angeles on June 9 at 11:19 p.m. Pacific time.
The couple has not publicly explained why they chose surrogacy. Gaga has previously discussed living with fibromyalgia, a chronic condition that can cause widespread pain and severe fatigue, but there is no confirmed connection between her health and the decision. Medical privacy remains medical privacy, even when the patient owns several Grammys.
What has Lady Gaga said about fibromyalgia?
Gaga spoke candidly about chronic pain in her 2017 Netflix documentary, Gaga: Five Foot Two. She said she wanted other people dealing with similar conditions to understand that they were not alone.
During a 2020 interview with Oprah Winfrey, the singer described the extent of her symptoms in blunt terms: “Even sitting here with you today, I’m in head-to-toe pain.”
By 2025, Gaga said her fibromyalgia was under control, although she still experienced what she called “pain days.” She has not said that the condition influenced how she and Polansky welcomed their child, so any claim beyond that would be speculation dressed up as certainty.
Does Rose Bean Polansky’s name have special meaning?
The name may contain references to parts of Gaga’s career and personal history, though the couple has not publicly confirmed its significance.
Gaga has a rose tattoo across her back connected to her performance of “La Vie En Rose” in the 2018 film A Star Is Born. “Bean” may also recall LGBTQ+ activist Carl Bean, whose work inspired her song “Born This Way.” The associations are certainly available. Whether they guided the naming decision is another matter.
Dr. Robert Katz delivered Rose. Katz is also the obstetrician-gynecologist who helped Ciara and Russell Wilson welcome their daughter, Sienna.
Photos of the new family surfaced over the weekend before the report, showing Gaga carrying the swaddled baby while walking with Polansky. They offered the first public glimpse of Rose.
Gaga and Polansky became engaged in 2024. In recent weeks, they have largely stayed out of public view while spending time with their newborn, a fairly conventional response to having a baby, despite the unusually high level of public interest surrounding this one.
