The Kaylee Hottle cause of death has been confirmed after the 18-year-old actor, best known for playing Jia in the recent Godzilla films, was killed in a single-car crash in Maryland earlier this week.
The Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed to Deadline that Hottle died from multiple blunt force injuries. Her manner of death has been listed as accidental, and an initial autopsy was completed Wednesday morning.
What happened in the Maryland crash?
The Frederick County Sheriff’s Department said deputies and Frederick County fire and rescue crews responded to a fatal single-vehicle collision on Windsor Road in Ijamsville at 2:52am on Tuesday, July 21.
According to the sheriff’s department, the vehicle was a 1995 Honda Accord driven by a 19-year-old man from Frederick. Investigators said the car left the right side of the two-lane road and hit a culvert, possibly while traveling at “excessive speed.”
Hottle was one of two passengers in the car. The driver was taken to a local hospital with injuries officials said were not believed to be life-threatening. The other passenger declined medical treatment at the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit.
Her family shared the news in ASL
Hottle’s father, Joshua Hottle, was the first to publicly share that she had died. In a 23-minute Facebook livestream, later confirmed to TMZ, he communicated in American Sign Language that his daughter had been involved in a car accident in Maryland.
He said officials notified him about the crash and that he flew to Maryland to retrieve her body after being told her heart had stopped on the way to the hospital.
Her mother, Ketsi Hottle, also posted a video on Instagram in ASL, captioning it: “Privilege to be your mom, Kaylee Hottle.”
The Sun reported that dispatcher audio suggested first responders worked to find an American Sign Language interpreter to bring to the scene. The outlet also reported that both an ambulance and a medevac helicopter were sent to transport Hottle, but she was pronounced dead after arriving at an area trauma center.
Why Kaylee Hottle’s Godzilla role mattered
Hottle, who was deaf, became widely known for playing Jia in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong. She returned to the role three years later in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
In the films, Jia is a teenager living on Skull Island with Dr. Ilene Andrews, played by Rebecca Hall, as her adoptive mother. Jia communicates with King Kong through sign language, a story detail that gave the blockbuster monster universe a rare kind of intimacy amid the usual city-leveling chaos. Subtle, it was not. But it mattered.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2007, Hottle was discovered by casting director Sarah Halley Finn after appearing in an advertisement for Convo, a video relay service app.
Her performance in Godzilla vs. Kong earned her a Saturn Award nomination for best younger performer in a film.
Speaking to The AU Review about the role, Hottle said: “I’m acting in monster movies as a deaf person. I want deaf people to know that they can do that too, just like me. There are no limits.”
Co-stars and Hollywood figures paid tribute
Millie Bobby Brown, who worked with Hottle on Godzilla vs. Kong, posted a tribute after news of her death emerged.
“I’m so devastated to hear this. You will be deeply missed Kaylee,” Brown, 22, wrote on Instagram Stories, alongside a photo of Hottle from the film.
Rebecca Hall, 44, also shared photos of herself with Hottle on the sets of the Godzilla films.
“Devastated to hear this news. My heart goes out to your family. You will be missed Kaylee,” Hall wrote.
Eiza González, who also appeared in the franchise, wrote that her “heart is absolutely broken” and shared a photo of the two of them in costume.
“I’m devastated. I adore you,” González wrote.
Dan Stevens, who starred in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, remembered Hottle as both a colleague and an advocate.
“Such a heartbreaking loss. We’ve lost our little friend. The deaf community have lost a shining advocate. My heart goes out to all Kaylee’s family and friends,” Stevens wrote.
The film community remembered her warmth and talent
Brian Tyree Henry, another of Hottle’s Godzilla co-stars, shared a photo from the press tour featuring himself, Hall, and Hottle.
“Heartbroken. Losses like this are so hard to understand,” Henry wrote.
“Kaylee was such an incredible soul – bright, gifted, loving. To lose her is devastating beyond words. Her light will be missed by all of us who were lucky enough to see her shine.
“Sending strength, love and the deepest of condolences to her family and friends. Rest in perfect peace, Kaylee.”
Marlee Matlin, the only deaf actor to have won the Oscar for best actress, for 1987’s Children of a Lesser God, also posted a tribute.
“I am absolutely gutted about the passing of sweet Kaylee Hottle,” Matlin, 60, wrote. “May her beauty and talent be a memory for eternity.”
Matlin added: “Such a privilege to have met Kaylee last year. Please be kind to one another. Take the time to listen to your child. Say 🤟🏼 each time you part.” She shared the message alongside a photo of herself with Hottle at Texas School for the Deaf, where Hottle was a student.
Texas School for the Deaf and Legendary Pictures responded
Texas School for the Deaf confirmed Hottle’s death in a statement on Facebook.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the heartbreaking news that one of our TSD seniors, Kaylee Hottle, tragically passed away yesterday in a car accident in Frederick, Maryland,” the school wrote.
“Our hearts are with Kaylee’s family, friends, classmates, and everyone who knew and loved her during this incredibly difficult time.”
Legendary Pictures, the production company behind the Godzilla films, also issued a statement on X, calling Hottle a “cherished member of our film family.”
“Her kindness, warmth, and remarkable talent touched everyone fortunate enough to work alongside her,” the company wrote. “Our hearts are with her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her during this unimaginably difficult time.”
Hottle’s screen career was brief, but it reached a global audience. For many viewers, especially deaf children watching a young deaf actor stand at the emotional center of a major franchise, her presence was not just casting. It was a door opening, even if far too briefly.
