Jennifer Lawrence’s Hunger Games Legacy Endures

Joseph Zada will portray a young Haymitch Abernathy, the character played by Woody Harrelson in the original films. He joins a cast that includes:

• Ralph Fiennes as President Snow
• Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman
• Glenn Close as Drusilla Sickle
• Whitney Peak as Lenora Dove Baird

Close also appears transformed in the film’s teaser trailer, adding another veteran name to Panem’s increasingly crowded awards-season résumé.

“There’s always been an approach to go with new, young, up-and-coming people that the world mostly hasn’t heard of to play some of the younger cast,” Francis Lawrence explained, “and then to go for veteran actors. And we followed suit with that approach.”

Lawrence has directed every film in the franchise except the original The Hunger Games. He said the appeal extends beyond the cast lists, arguing that the series’ themes also draw actors to the project.

How will Katniss and Peeta return?

Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are set to make brief appearances as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. Their return is expected to come in a flash-forward near the end of the film, following the epilogue of Suzanne Collins’ 2025 novel Sunrise on the Reaping.

That scene takes place after the Capitol revolution depicted in Mockingjay. Katniss and Peeta sit with Haymitch and learn the tragic story of his past, including his relationship with Lenora Dove Baird.

After discovering that Lenora cared for geese, the pair give their former mentor a flock to look after. The gesture connects Haymitch’s later life to the woman he lost and gives the story one final emotional turn, because Panem has never been known for allowing anyone a simple retirement.

“Like the geese,” Haymitch says in the novel, “we really did mate for life.”

The cameos link the new prequel directly to the original films while keeping the focus on Haymitch’s history. They also underline Francis Lawrence’s point: the earlier cast has not merely left behind familiar characters. Its work continues to shape who joins the franchise and how its expanding story fits together.
