The Helldivers movie has lost Jason Momoa, leaving Sony with a fairly important item on its production checklist: find a new lead before the film’s planned release on November 10, 2027.
Deadline has reported that Momoa is no longer attached to the live-action video game adaptation, and The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the casting change. Sony has not said why he left. Deadline described the project as “still very much alive,” which is reassuring in the same way a studio calendar can be reassuring: useful, but not exactly warm.
Why Jason Momoa’s Exit Matters
Momoa’s departure is a real reset for the film, even if it does not appear to threaten the project outright. He was the biggest known acting name attached to the adaptation, and his presence gave the movie an easy point of recognition beyond the game’s existing audience.
That matters for a property like Helldivers, which has a clear identity but also a very specific tone. The games mix military sci-fi, co-op chaos, and satire about patriotic obedience in the name of Super Earth. Translating that to live action will require more than armor, explosions, and stern speeches about democracy. Though, to be fair, there will probably be a lot of those.
Sony now has to find someone who can carry that tone without flattening it into generic space warfare. No replacement has been announced.
How The Film Got Here
Sony first announced plans for a live-action Helldivers film in January 2025, following the enormous success of Helldivers 2. The sequel launched in February 2024 and quickly became one of PlayStation’s biggest breakout franchises.
The movie is designed to bring the fight for Super Earth to the big screen, expanding a brand that has already moved well beyond niche status. That momentum made the adaptation feel almost inevitable, especially at a time when studios are still mining video games for recognizable worlds and built-in audiences.
Arrowhead Studios, the developer behind the games, confirmed soon after the film’s announcement that it would be involved in the project. That involvement matters because fans tend to notice when adaptations treat the source material as a loose suggestion rather than, say, the reason anyone showed up.
Who Is Still Attached
While Momoa is out, the core creative team has not been reported as leaving. Justin Lin, known for his work on the Fast and Furious franchise, remains attached to direct. His involvement was announced in December.
The producing team includes Hutch Parker, Asad Qizilbash through PlayStation Productions, and Lin through Perfect Storm Entertainment. That keeps Sony’s adaptation pipeline firmly in place, even as the lead role goes back into play.
The film is still dated for November 10, 2027. That gives Sony time to recast, but also puts pressure on the studio to make the next choice count. A major video game adaptation can survive a casting change. It just cannot afford to look uncertain for too long.
What Comes Next For PlayStation Adaptations
The casting shakeup comes as PlayStation keeps looking for ways to move its biggest franchises into film and television. Sony has also been developing projects tied to Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, and Bloodborne for new mediums.
That broader strategy helps explain why the Helldivers project is unlikely to disappear over one star’s exit. PlayStation has been building a slate, not taking a one-off gamble.
For now, the film’s biggest open question is simple: who leads the Helldivers next? Sony still has the release date, the director, the producers, and a franchise with a large audience. What it does not have, at least publicly, is the face of the mission.
