Idris Elba’s unusual request to Kate Winslet arrived during one of the more awkward parts of making The Mountain Between Us: its intimate scene. Elba reportedly asked Winslet whether he could keep his socks on while they filmed it.
It was a small request, but an unexpectedly practical one for a scene built around vulnerability. Winslet, already experienced with intimate scenes on screen, has described taking a direct approach to the sequence while others on set were more hesitant.
Why the scene made Idris Elba nervous
Released in 2017, The Mountain Between Us stars Winslet as photojournalist Alex Martin and Elba as surgeon Ben Bass. After their charter plane crashes in a remote, snow-covered mountain range, the strangers must depend on each other to survive.
That ordeal gradually brings the characters closer, leading to an intimate scene that required a different sort of trust from the actors. Winslet later recalled that Elba was nervous about filming it, while director Hany Abu-Assad was also carefully working through how the sequence should be staged.
Elba’s request to leave his socks on became one of the lighter details from the production. Keeping some clothing in place during intimate filming is hardly extraordinary, particularly when actors are negotiating comfort and modesty. Socks are simply a more noticeable choice when the rest of the scene is designed to suggest spontaneity.
Winslet ultimately helped move the filming along, drawing on her previous experience to make the process clearer and less uncomfortable. Glamorous work, apparently, still includes practical discussions about footwear.

Her response reflected a broader reality of intimate scenes: what looks emotional and unplanned on screen is usually carefully arranged. Performers have to agree on movements, boundaries and camera positions while maintaining the trust needed to sell the moment to viewers.
The industry has since made greater use of intimacy coordinators, although their presence was less standard when The Mountain Between Us was filmed. On this production, Winslet’s confidence helped provide some of that structure informally.
The anecdote matters less because Elba wanted to keep his socks on and more because it shows how exposed actors can feel during these sequences, regardless of their fame or experience. For audiences, the finished scene is part of Alex and Ben’s emotional journey. For the people filming it, it was a technical and personal negotiation, with one very specific wardrobe condition.
